I continue to find it baffling that people talk about Eubank as if he had talent. It's uncanny.

There are other obvious issues too, but I'll just mention the main one.

Interesting thread, and the key to how you view Collins' resume is Benn. I think most would agree that Eubank was a very good fighter, and while probably a bit past his peak he was coming off one of his career best wins (Wharton) and would give Calzaghe and Thompson plenty to think about it. I thought Collins clearly won both fights, and whichever way you shake it they are two very impressive wins.

Benn is a different matter. There are many reasons to believe that he was a shadow of the fighter who beat McClellan, both physically and mentally, and personally I don't attach much merit to these wins. Neither win was completely satisfactory either, due to the injury in the first fight and Benn's retirement in the other. However, if you think Benn was still a world class fighter, it does put the wins in a different light.

Brown was a better fighter than many give him credit for, and Seillier was a good win on paper (IIRC it was a cuts stoppage when the fight was getting interesting). I think Carr's reputation was mainly built on how he performed against Collins, and it wasn't long after that he got mullered by Francis. At that stage of his career Collins did seem to fight down to the quality of his opposition (Cummings is another example).

If you rate the wins over Benn then you can make an argument for it being better than Ward's. However, if you don't you're left with a very top-heavy resume which relies heavily on wins against a single fighter.

Benn was finished by the time Collins got to him. You'd have to be incredibly biased not to admit this.

    I pretty much agree..

I think Collins and Ward are close resume wise, but if I had to pick, I would lean towards Ward.

Having double wins against Eubank and Benn looks monstorous on paper, but like you said Benn's state was questionable. Can't deny the Eubank victories though. Great wins there.

I think Ward has more quality wins at the weight for sure, but Steve certainly has the biggest wins in Eubank.

Wasn't it in 1997, Steve was still active? When a guy gets into the ring after your fight in your hometown of Pensacola, and you still refuse to fight him, that's as clear as day.

As for Jones beating Collins, probably but it's a shame Roy didn't share your confidence :deal

You're referring to Mccallum and Johnson? When did Steve fight them and when did Roy fight them :deal

had Ward of beat Kessler and Froch without the cheating, then it would be him by a clear margin. but considering he didn't, i actually have a lot more respect for the Eubank wins, and rate them much higher. i don't give credit for cheating performances.

Benn was about as shot as a fighter can get when he lost to Collins. i don't give credit for them.

i don't give any credit for the Dawson win for Ward (he was weight drained) don't give any for the Green and Mirander wins either. one was shot, the other was a bag of **** who had done nothing in his career.

i give Ward credit for the Bika win (although he was past his best) because he's still a tough *******. although it was much closer than the bogus cards from the home town judges.

and i give him a bit of credit for the Abraham fight. yeah, he'd come off a dominating loss, and was just turning up to get it over with, but Ward didn't cheat in that one. Abraham was in his prime but he refused to let his hands go. it wasn't because he was incapable, but because he chose to. that's his fault, not Wards.

so it's Collins for me at this point.

I actually think when Collins was in the ring with Roy, Collins was inactive.. Hbo then showed 4 possible Jones opponents, 2 of which he beat in his next 2 fights. The other 2 being DM and Hopkins 2...

I don't think HBO or Roy took Steve serious at that point.

You can only admire and respect the man. He desperately wanted Roy, but he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In 97, Roy was already at 175.

When he got in the ring after Frazier it was 1999. Collins had been inactive, and he'd never fought at the weight. Roy dismissed him to unify against Reggie Johnson.

Looking from the U.K.'s perspective, it would have been a big fight. But from a U.S. perspective it simply wasn't. Collins was respected, but he wasn't a big name and there was no real demand for the fight.

Again, he didn't fight at 175, he'd been inactive, he wasn't a mandatory, and he didn't bring in any money.

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but I think had Collins been a major belt holder at 175 between 96-2000, I think Roy would have fought him.

I think he was dismissed rather than ducked. If you're scared of Collins at 168, when you're 29-30 and in your prime, then you wouldn't move up to heavy 4-5 years later. It's ridiculous.

Right now? Collins. Give it some time though and I think I'd say Ward.

I don't see why Collins should have been dismissed? He was a legitimate fighter who would have been one of Roy's best wins. He would have been a better win than Reggie Johnson or anyone else Roy fought at the time. Steve came into the ring in Pensacola to call Roy out, if for example Steve Collins jumped into the ring after a Joe Calzaghe fight in Wales, and Joe ignored him, do you think people on here would ignore that or say Joe was justified? I think Roy himself knows it and that's why he's agreed to fight him this year

    Ward.

Froch and Kessler > Eubank and Benn.

    not a huge gap though.

in fact i think collins might have a better resume than calzaghe :think

Collins never wrecked a man via headbutts though. Ward should have been DQ'd, Kessler is permanently damaged from Wards billygoating, how the **** can you give a man credit for that (sad thing being, when Ward boxed, yeah, he was winning comfortably)

    Hey my man,

How's things? Haven't spoke to you for a bit.

The fight with Reggie was to unify at 175. Also, even if Roy had agreed to fight him, and HBO had've wanted it, the fight sadly wouldn't have happened anyway, because we know that Collins had to retire through injury.

Going off topic, do you remember when we were talking about Ward vs Dawson last year, and you were telling me how weight drained Chad was? Have you read the thread that was posted on here earlier? Iceman gives his side of the story in a full interview. I couldn't believe what i was reading. Chad trained hard for a five week period and ended up GAINING 2 pounds at one point. Unbelievable!

If you haven't seen it, check it out. You were bang on the money!
