 Thank you for adding 20 pages to this thread. The Calzaghe/Ward topic should get a sticky like the TKO6 thread.:good

Evening pal, all is well, busy but good. How are you?

Don't get me wrong, Reggie Johnson was a good fight to make, but did it have to be Reggie or Steve? Why not both? With Roy's HBO contract, he could have fought anyone he wanted

Yeah I saw John's posts earlier, it's great to have someone in the game like him posting on here giving us the truth. Once the fight was announced at 168, it was game over for Chad. He's a big LHW, and an excellent fighter,at 168 Dawson was a dead man walking. It was a devastating loss, it will take a lot for Chad to bounce back from that

When has a fighter come down in weight for a big fight and been successful in the long term?

    knockout artist,

    Great mate, thanks.

Well at that specific time, Reggie was the fight to make. Collins was supposed to be fighting Calzaghe again, with the winner potentially facing Roy. But Collins apparently was knocked out by Howard Eastman in sparring, and he was forced to retire. If Collins had actually fought at 175, then he may have became a mandatory to Roy. I think if he'd have held a major belt, Roy would have taken he fight.

I see it like this. At 168, Steve's WBO belt wasn't enough to entice Roy into a fight. Roy couldn't deal with King to unify, and despite Steve been a great fighter, his belt was worthless back then in the mid 90's.

Then Roy moved up to 175, but Steve didn't. So he was pursuing a guy that wasn't even in his weight class. He'd have probably had more success following him up to 175, rather than getting into the ring with him. Boxing is a business. After Frazier, HBO put a list of four fighters up, and Collins obviously wasn't one of them. If he hadn't have climbed into the ring, his name would never have been mentioned. It would be like a retired 140 fighter getting into the ring with Floyd after a fight a 147, and demanding a fight. It would be instantly dismissed.

Yeah I love reading his posts. I can't believe that he hadn't eaten for a full day, and had to suck a little bit of juice out of a grapefruit, and he'd done a 50 min run on the treadmill, and been in the sauna.

That's why I always stick up for Roy.

He was nearly 35, and he'd had 50 fights, when he came back for Tarver. He came from 199 pounds down to 175 for the weigh in, with around 14 pounds of that weight actual muscle. It was a huge ask of his body. Chad's issues really put things into perspective.

I agree that there were too many butts in that fight but I dont think Ward is a dirty fighter.

Collins could be very naughty at times too, probably more than Ward tbh.

Nope,it was in 1999, after the Frazier fight.
Do you really think fighting a guy who had been retired for 2 years and who had never fought in your weight division would have be a credible fight for Jones????

As for when Jones beat McCallum and Johnson.

McCallum was past his best, but he had held the WBC title up until the year previously.

And Johnson, he beat when Johnson was reigning 175 IBF champ.

Eubank himself would be the first to admit that he was never the most talented, the quickest or the strongest fighter. He attributes his successes to perseverance.

But to imply that Eubank had nothing going for him as a pro-boxer and to act as if Eubank wasn't a very good Middleweight and Super Middleweight with good names on his resume and a damned successful career and thus was not a good scalp for others to have on their resume puts your judgement as a neutral and unbiased observer into question.

You've gotta be shitting me dood..... You trying to downplay the entire SuperMid division to downrate Ward?

Every boxing analyst has said the SuperMid divsion has been stacked for the past 5 years! Why else do you think they did a 3 year tournament anyhow? They knew the boxers' names would carry this long-term tournament through the years.

You think they'd do this in some random division with a bunch of no-namers? Come on now!!! Get real

Thanks KO. Always good to have your input on these threads. Someone who knows their boxing
Collins never got beat at SMW. Neither did Jones to be fair, but Collins chased Jones like crazy.
Do you think Collins fighting top fighters early in his career, compares to Jones fighting the same fighters when he was experienced in his career and they were then past best?

    Good post.
Carr was mauled by Francis, but Francis was an amazing talent who had a big punch. Remember how he got to Starie when he started to land flush, after little had happened in the previous rounds.
I always thought Reid when undefeated world champ against Francis would have been good
How was he finished when he lost a close SD, to a fighter who would go on to become a world champ again?
Where has the thread been bias?
You make your decision based on what?

    Good and honest
    This is interesting.
    Wards best win is Kessler.
Now you put Ward above Collins as you rate Kessler and Froch above Eubank.
Then you say that you put Collins SMW resume above Calzaghe, when Calzaghe beat Kessler when undefeated.
Sure you must be a troll Lufc. Just a bad one.
You just showed that you are bias and know little. Were you even born or watching boxing when Eubank was fighting?

I agree, he has already shown that he slips up terribly

So how do you rate Wards SMW title resume above Collins?
No downplay at all, just look at facts.
Wards best win was an unwell double vision suffering fighter, who hadnt fought in top world class for 3 years when he lost, was rusty etc. That same fighter was beaten by the previous SMW champ years previous, when that champ was old and past his best. Thats it. Then that unwell double vision sufering fighter beats froch which give a bench mark.
All of Wards top SMW wins date back to the previous champ in some way.
They made the tournament to try and fill the gap of the previous champ and still all roads lead to him. Sad but true
