I think price has the physical attributes to be a great fighter; height, reach, strength but he seriously needs to work on his style. Watching the Thompson fight he literally has no defence at all. It would be okay not using your hands to cover your face if you had really good head movement like haye and sharp footwork to back it up. But his footwork, reflexes or intuition are to slow, he cant take a backstep quick enough (check out how wlad avoids hayes bombs for a good example of fast footwork and intuition). So if youre not going to use your hands to cover your face and youre not going to move your head then you should at least use that massively long and powerful jab arm to keep you opponent at bay? Instead he goes in with right hand leads to the body while leaving his left hand crazy low. Firstly you need to be a baby step closer for the big right and another baby step closer for the body so he is putting himself in range of anything Thompson wants to counter with, going for a hard shot to pull off and leaving his left wayyyy low. It wasnt a fluke punch that took Price down, a bit of a sloppy punch but Thompson saw this opening in the first and second round a whole bunch of times and took advantage of it once in the first aswell. He would of taken advantage of that punch all night long if the fight went on longer as I don't think Price would of adjusted. I think Price needs to not use his left hand to block low shots, learn how to come forward fast without literally taking steps (walking), learn how to baby step back at the right time and re establish his jab to maintain control. Mentally ware his opponent down a bit first before going for lead rights to the body, learn his range better and use his jab to maintain the range and pick out weaknesses before committing to anything else (lead right to the body before your opponent is even tired?). I think it would be to much work for him to learn how to fight in the pocket now and he should adopt a pure Wlad style. I could go on for a while really and am truly gutted he lost as I was really looking forward to the future of our heavy weights but the first thing he needs to do is not change but learn how to be flexible and learn how to change if that makes sense?
I think your being a little ott. He controls range very effectively, and is comfortable with his low slung left style. The finish had little to do with a low lead, it came during an exchange and was simply the kind of give and take work you would expect at world level, the problem with last night's performance is his lack of punch resistance, not much to do with his style. I see your point about boxing like wlad, the idea of keeping range, staying safe etc but for me, even wlads chin looks like steel compared to prices, even wlad has to take reasonably flush shots from time to time and he doesn't fold like david did from what was really, a pretty standard punch.
Problem is the only reason he kept any distance at all was because Thompson obviously respected his power and was being cautious himself. Price is standing there in range not using his jab and not really giving Thompson much to think about. When Thompson use his jab (test stick) Price is sending nothing back for Thompson to think about so Thompson is afforded all the time in the world to think about Prices openings. When they got into a bit of an exchange Thompson knew exactly where to throw his punches.
My little review of Price's performance is he failed to make the grade. Getting blasted out against a old fat journeyman, who was picked in the first place to make him look good. One word, pathetic. Against a ameribum too.
So lack of activity is his problem then? He was in complete control, had barely taken a shot, was dictating the tempo but in an exchange got caught. No point in over complicating it. Rubbish punch resistance for me.
this is ridiculous. What could people expect? Price has spent the last 4 years fighting guys who haven't been throwing anything back - it's no wonder he has completely neglected his defence. This is all Maloney's fault for his poor matchmaking. Fury, for all his faults, has been tested a number of times already not least against John Mcdermott. Those are the kind of fights that progress a fighter - not the ones where you just get target practice against a scared overweight eastern european. Price has not been given the chance to develop an effective style for his weaknesses.
Price's loss had nothing to do with his style or lack of defence, it's not as if Thompson saw a gap in the armour and exploited it. The shot landed during the type of exchange you will always get at this level, and it looked the kind of shot that decent heavyweights would be expected to take without too much trouble. Shots landing in that area do tend to be disorientating, but to end a fight like that it normally takes a fairly heavy handed fighter, or the victim needs to have a punch resistance problem. Thompson is not a noted banger.
I don't see how you think he boxed okay? Well maybe okay....but not really to a world prospect standard. Any decent pro above our domestic level could of taken advantage of his flaws, so if he is chinny and that is his main problem then he needs to be boxing better and not have his flaws so exposed. He has loads of power, enough to keep I imagine any pro at bay and respecting his distance. So he needs to be fighting at distance picking of long shots from behind his jab not getting into hook range with lead right hands to the body. Unfortunatly good boxing is boxing to your strengths and not letting your weakness be compromised ie getting in hook range with nothing protecting your chin (ear). So he wasnt really boxing good as he did this a number of times.
Agree with some of the posts above, i also think Price underestimated Thompson, he was saying he had to beat Thompson in style to impress, and that it'll put him into world title contention, instead of just focusing on winning by any means. Price will most likely defend his british titles and build up some confidence before stepping up again, I think what he needs is an instant rematch with Thompson in a make or break fight, it would prove alot about Price.
He boxed robotic and stiff because that's how he fights, in fairness he had no reason to change because he had been blasting people out, his ability to take a shot is in serious question, its not the end of the road for him because he can still punch and the division bar a few fighters is weak but forget any hopes of being the next big thing, If he can pick up the European title that will still be a respectable achievement.
Perhaps I'm not giving Thompson enough credit, he certainly looked like he was comfortable in there. When Price had him on the ropes and got some good shots off, I did notice how Thompson wasn't the slightest bit flustered. I believe Thompson was confident he could win, but I doubt whether he thought Price would go down that easily.
