I just got laser surgery done on a torn retina yesterday, and I was in emerge for a pretty bad concussion back in november. But the thing is, Ive only been boxing since september, about 6 months, and I havent even had my first fight yet, these are just training injuries. A brain injury and an eye injury, in 6 months of boxing. I was supposed to have my first fight this upcoming friday, but now obviously ive pulled out. I have coaches and training partners tell me all the time how naturally talented I am, and how far I could take the sport. Im handling very seasoned amateur fighters and professionals in sparring and have progressed extremely fast for a beginner, Id hate to have to give up so soon. What do you guys think? Where should I draw the line? I would hate to have to give up so soon without even seeing how well I could do in this sport.
Can I ask what gym are you at? I have just done my level 1 ABA coaching course and I am a novice boxer myself and listen mate, you should not bet getting injurys like that from training. A lot of gyms don't take enough care of all their boxers and just throw in raw novices as cannon fodder for their best kids to beat the **** out of. Most of the sparring you should be doing should be conditioned or technical, you only need one or two sessions of a really hard open spar for each fight. Sounds like you should leave that gym mate, if this is the kind of crap that's happening in training your probably at the type of gym where they'll match you up with more expierienced and heavier guys regularly.
i do boxing at an mma gym, there are no boxing gyms here but they have an amateur boxing program. i spar literally every day i am in the gym,so about 3 or 4 days a week, and its rarely ever light. we arent forced to wear headgear, and yes, i spar exhausted quite frequently and when i do my head gets used as a speedbag and i just try to survive. theyll usually put a fresh guy in every round when i was getting close to a fight, or if they really wanna turn it up a notch a fresh guy every 30-60 seconds. unfortunately i have no access to any other gyms because i am here for school for 2 years, i do get along really well with my coaches tho, just question the training techniques...
bad news mate. I have been there myself training at an mma gym with a coach doing stupid sparring drills even though I got along with him outside of boxing. My advice is to just tell your coach you only want to spar once a week and when everybody else is sparring do shadow boxing or something. Trust me, what you are doing is not just bad for you boxing but bad for your health. I know boxers from gyms like this who are punchy after hardly any fights.
i guess his problem is if he quits this one he doesnt have another to go too.....where do you live man? like what town city? (country, state, nation?)
unfortunately that is correct, i have nowhere else to go, the original gym that was a pure boxing gym and housed lots of good fighters, pros and olympians as well as a level 5 coach is all long gone. this is my only option, and i wont say the name of the city just because its the only gym here and i dont want to give the gym any bad publicity, but i will be going to sudbury canada in 2 years to finish my program , and there is im assuming better boxing gyms there
when you going to this other place? honestly man.....dont box where you are at.....that is some dumb **** the trainers are having you do....
you can always go to this gym and do bag work..with that torn retina..you cant be sparring now anyhow...
yeah thats my plan, i told the coach about my eye and he understands how bad of an injury it is and hes not letting me spar until i get doctor clearance, which could be a few months, and ill be back home by then anyways where we have no gym. ill be in sudbury fall of 2014.
Sparring hard every day,no headgear, exhausted and sparring?Get your things and get out of there cause your gonna be a vegetable. I saw a kid here posting his sparring, they spar really hard with 10 0z gloves, that isnt healthy or methodical at all. What trainers allow that stuff??
