Primo Carnera vs Chris Byrd

I dont think Bryd was that good. He doesnt compare to a jack sharkey who dismantled carnera easily over 15 rounds. I like Carnera by unanimous decision if he uses his size and strength to dictate the fight, and fights behind his underated jab.

 

I'm more interested in hearing what you have to say about it Janitor.

 

Hard fight to call, i think it could go both ways. Byrd has only lost to extremely talented fighters (Klitschko, Ibeabuchi and Povetkin when he was old). The size thing certainly wouldn't be new for him.

Byrd was difficult to stop. While Carnera was huge, Byrd’s record of accomplishment for beating 6'4'+ fighters is good. Byrd defeated McCline 6'6", Williamson 6'4", and drew with Golota 6'4". He also got a gift win over Vitali K who was 6'7"+.

Byrd took much heavier / less skilled fighters to town in Tua, and Thunder. And he easily outclassed older fighters such as Holyfield.

Carnera was moderately skilled. Size and heart were his best attributes, not speed or defense. I don’t think Carnera is likely to knock Chris Byrd out. He didn’t hit that hard, and was not the type to set up a skilled combination KO.

I think Byrd’s overall skills, southpaw style, and speed would earn him a decision over Carnera. Carnera could be out boxed by smaller men. Fighters like Gains, Pedora, and Maloney come to mind.

 

I agree. Carnera's size and heart would keep in the fight, and a man of Byrd's size and light power, would prevent a Ko or stoppage from taking place. Overall though, I see Byrd outboxing Carnera without much trouble. He was much faster, more skilled, and more athletic. In a 15 round fight, I see Byrd taking about 11 of those rounds. The only time Carnera scores points, is when Chris slows down to rest every now and again.

 

Carnera is tailor made for Byrd, big and not particularly quick. Those are the guys Byrd lived for. I think he would take a wide decision.

 

Have to remember that he survived in there with the 6'7 250lb Vitali, making him miss to the point where he wrecked his shoulder.

 

True, but Klitschko was winning that fight handedly, and as for the shoulder injury, I think it was something that was already predisposed. He had a history of having injuries that never mended right.

He obviously had no issues going into the fight, and fought an extremely good fight up until the injury.

I give Byrd more credit than most for it, I guess.

I like Carnera in a close one here. I think his jab would decide the fight in the end. Interestingly, the huge Carnera had the better lateral movement of the two, and his stamina was extremely good for a big fellow.
