I've always wanted to box, even if i never compete, just learn and train with them. I can remember being 9, after my grandpa died and we where cleaning his house out, i saw Raging Bull in the cabinet and i took it because it had a boxer on the cover, i watched Rocky, i played punchout as a kid. Now i have a gym in my attic, i do mostly calisthenics and weighted calisthenics, medicine ball training, and i punch a heavy bag. So i''m not training like a real boxer but i'm doing the best i can. There's no good gyms around, if there is its too far away, and i'm not making excuses but i'm in construction and some nights i work late, and its tough to make a schedule, which is why my home gym is worth its weight in gold. I want to enlist in the military, and i think training in a gym would help me build confidence, because it would take me out of my comfort zone. There is a MMA place near me that looks like its really good. Its not boxing but its the next best thing to me. Most "boxing gyms" around me seem more like aerobics class for soccer moms. Too family friendly.. So should i try out MMA maybe?
I can appreciate where you're coming from. No need to explain. I was in the same position - wanted to train without competing, just because I loved the sport since I was a kid and wanted to stay fit. Ended up competing anyway, but I would never look down on anyone who wanted to train just as a hobby or past time. Anyway, in my opinion you'll never know until you try it. Do these places offer a one day free trial? Some places do and I think they all should if they know what's good for them. We can't say if an MMA gym or boxing gym is better cuz there's too many other factors that could make one better than the other. For example, at first glance - my own boxing gym could look like a white collar boxing "fitness" or family oriented place, depending on which night you come. It's how most gyms pay the bills. We also have a small team of people who train very seriously and receive serious training. And yes, some of those people compete, and some just train. We share the facilities without any issues. We get along fine and nobody judges each other. So my point is, don't let outside appearances fool you. Give them each a try, especially if one works better with your location & schedule.
Your right, i should. I would like to maybe compete, at least once. But i may try it out and learn that its not for me, but if i like it, i want to compete at least once. Then I can say i did it, not i didn't and i regret it.

Joew, also the thing about the military is that you don't really need to be "tough" to make it. You just need to be an average worker, of average intelligence. I been in the military for 6 years and I see my share of pansies on a daily basis
I know, its, just i've never been a part of anything. I never played sports, i was fat as a kid. I worked my ass off too loose weight and get in shape, and now i'm comfortable enough with my self to go out and try something like boxing or mma. I'm pretty mentally tough anyways, and for the average man, physically too. I do construction, carrying bricks and digging holes in 90 degree weather will toughen any man up. So if anyone can join the military, it is me. I'm in the Boston area if that helps. I'm not in Boston, and i don't have time to travel into boston for a gym. Maybe Cambridge or Somerville but thats it, traffic in Boston is too much.
What you explained to me, I KNOW you can make it in the military. You never been apart of anything? Well go ahead and give it a shot man. It doesn't matter what you did yesterday, it is all about today and the future. I was also heavy as a kid, but I started training and working out and I have been excelling in the military. I made E-5 in two years, and now I am an officer candidate. If I can do it ANYONE can. The hardest thing about the military is if you come in with an attitude problem, that is the only way you can fail.
If theres only MMA around might as well join. If you start rising the ranks somewhat, then you can find boxing more easily.
I don't want to join the military for confidence. And i don't have low confidence to begin with, well maybe a little but i've just been trying to push my self to do things i'm too shy to do because in the military, things could potentially be a lot worse. Any thing to make me both mentally and physically a stronger person. There are a lot of reasons i want to join, and if i don't, i know i'll look back and regret not giving it a shot.
