How are some boxers able to withstand flush combos w/o being ko'd?

I couldn't think of a the proper way to word my question, but what I mean is in fights such as Tyson vs Holyfield 1. At the end of round 10 Tyson was hit with about 20 flush shots in a row. Then in the 11th was hit with at least 10 more unanswered punches. Oddly I don't think he was ever in danger of being ko'd. I think he would have died in the ring before being ko'd. Why does this happen? Or do you not agree?

    Mental toughness,good conditioning,good chin

I mean Old Foreman never hit the deck once and Alex Stewart pounded his face in as well as Tommy Morrison,Holyfield and Michael Moorer.

    Jake Lamotta never went down.

It's gotta be mostly mental. Chris Arreola spoke about this after the Vitali fight saying "you have to kill me to get me to quit..."

nah mate the mind is a powerful thing but a mentally tough boxer can still have a bad chin, you'd be better off being chinny though as sustained punishment doesn't do the old brain any favours, even if it can take it

I agree. In Tyson's case it appeared that if the ref hadn't stopped the fight then he would have been killed as opposed to being ko'd. For one reason or another he was not able to lose consiousness. Im wondering why this happens and why others simply get their lights put out?
