Why don't fighters just throw the over hand right against the shoulder roll?

That had NOTHING to do with breaking a Philly Shell using an overhand right! That was NOT an overhand right! That was a Right Cross against a SOUTHPAW!

An overhand right arcs high and comes down. It only works on fighters who are shorter or defensively inadequate using the Philly Shell. Any guy who knows how to use it will be on his back foot and slightly off center to the right. As soon as you threw that garbage shot he would rotate right and away and raise his elbow. If it works your arm would catch elbow and ride right up and over his head.

A jab is designed to hit your opponent from "afar" ya dummy. Even the right cross would have more range than a overhand right. An arc in the punch = less extension. atsch

A hook is a punch where the arm is at a 90 (or greater) degree angle to the body and the body rotates through bringing the fist along an arc on the horizontal plane. If that was a hook it would have hit Tony in the BACK and not zinged past. Why? Toney's mass would have stopped the punch.

A overhand right is a garbage punch so garbage that it lands because guys don't expect it. It is basically a hook thrown on the vertical plane arcing down.

I wouldn't call it a 'garbage punch'...surely it's all in the execution? Marquez certainly made good use of it against Pac in their latest fight. It was also Maidana's best weapon against Khan, and he hurt him badly with it. I think the second big shot that Mosley landed on Mayweather (the one that made his legs buckle) was also an overhand right.

Sugar Ray Leonard also hurt Hearns with it in round 14 of their first fight, which led to the stoppage shortly afterwards.

 

Mccallum threw picture perfect long right hooks. Don't think many boxing coaches would equal those with overhands if they payed attention. They'll likely tell you not to throw it, though.

I think we need to make sure we are using the correct terminology here. An overhand right is a reactionary counter-punch, part of the cross-counter family. It travels over their attacking lead hand. The Looping Right/Looping Cross is different, that is a looping punch. (not to be confused with a swing)

Yes, the Looping Right is indeed a solid punch to use, but you have to time it/set it up, and you don't set Floyd up for anything, he knows the shell too well. When you loop the right hand, a lot of guys shoulder dip to the left, Floyd simply turns and deflects the looping right and picks you off with that 6(right upper) counter-punch. Toney did this a lot as well.

It would work against people that don't know how to vary their counter attack, but not against Toney/ Mayweather. If you are trying to break the shell, you're playing their game, you're fighting their fight, and that is a losing battle.
