Not really a big fan of Floyd's trash talk. He's simply not overly charismatic unlike the other 7 on the list.
it's hard to rank them for me. Some of them used different styles or looked for different outcomes from their trash talk. Mayorga seemed to want to **** you off Ali wanted to get in your head and throw you off Tyson wanted to intimidate you Mayweather and Haye most of the time want to sell tickets Hamed was also an entertainer and was super cocky James Toney just likes talking ****
If it's for the purpose of agitating your opponent to throw them off, then Floyd is up there. Personally, I like Tyson and Mayorga's grimy style of trash talking better than Ali's poetic ****. Ali's stuff was try hard when compared to Tyson's material
1. Muhammad Ali A Genius, very intelligent and he got into the minds of his opponents, and at the same time captured the imagination of the fans. His rhymes are so legendary they're still often quoted today, and not just by boxing fans (float like a butterfly...) 2. James Toney Embarrassing, neither funny nor witty, Toney just makes himself look like an idiot with his 'attempts' at trash talking. The only person worse at it I can think of is Adrien Broner 3. Ricardo Mayorga Legendary, he just didn't give a **** Said whatever he wanted when he wanted and as a result built up a huge profile for himself 4. Naseem Hamed The Prince was all show, he was confident, cocky and at the same time likeable and entertaining. A great character who the sport dearly misses 5. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Floyd isn't a great trashtalker like Ali, neither is he an embarrassment like James Toney. He has some decent one liners but I wouldn't rate him as a great trash talker 6. Mike Tyson Tyson genuinely intimidated his opponents, to the point where they were beaten before the first bell 7. David Haye Haye is brilliant, what he says doesn't seem scripted, and some of his lines have been hilarious (more one sided than a gang ****). Haye is another who says what he wants, when he wants and doesn't care about offending anyone. Made the HW division relevant again for a short time, great trash talker 8. Tyson Fury Fury seems a genuinely likeable and hilarious guy, Fury comes out with brilliant one liners and even though he's not the brightest tool in the shed, you can't help but laugh! His twitter is brilliant
I can agree with most of this.. Though I find Toney to be hilarious, he was a bit better at trash talking when he was younger.. I still laugh my ass off when I watch that video where he is talking **** to Benn and Eubank.
The fact that he's kept getting good fights after getting KO'd constantly means he can sell regardless of his losses. Mayorga is easily one of the funniest and by far the most disrespectful trash talker in history. Just over the top disrespectful stuff. Lol. Mayweather gets into people's head too. But is he really a good trash talker? I really don't believe so. He stutters too much and is just not a good speaker. He does annoy people but I think it's because of how he's loud and talks over and over and over right in your face and won't let the other guy say anything.
Of the list, Ali and Mayweather use their trash-talking to actually give them an advantage in the ring: to disrupt their opponents focus. Ali was brilliant at it: pretending he was crazy at the Liston weigh-in because he said the only type of person Liston would fear is a loony who didn't care about anything and was liable to do anything. It's notable that Ali was the first and most others try to emulate him or follow his example in terms of hyping fights, promoting themselves and intimidating their opponents. I agree that someone said above that Mayweather doesn't have the natural charisma of the others, it seems more reheresed with him. I wouldn't call Tyson a trash-talker as such: he used body language and almost a ferocious silence to intimidate. Many of his famous one liners weren't trash-talk but symptoms of his issues outside of the ring. I agree Haye is a good trash-talker, he does build up his fights and is quite charismatic. Tyson Fury tries a bit hard sometimes and trash-talks to everybody but is entertaining and gets people talking about him. Some classic quotes from him already. I wouldn't rate Toney as a very good trash talker as such, at this stage in his career saying he will beat everyone is a little more deluded bull than trash-talk.
