Absolutely. I like the stylistic parallel to Marquez, they are both the best defensive ring generals today, but Marquez has to take more offensive risks to bait and open up opportunities to get his shots off, sometimes compromising his balance. So for me it's definitely Hopkins. Nobody in the game moves like him. Now that he's older, the efficiency with which he does it is even more impressive. Watching him live also showed things about his footwork that I'd seen before but never as clearly. That mother****er turns a corner, which turns most fighters static, into a triangle he can maneuver left, right, forward, and backwards. He utilizes that space in way that doesn't seem possible and makes it look like he has all the real estate in the world.
In my opinion BHop's footwork is THE tool that made him an all time great. I've been pointing that out since October 2008. At that time most of the posters on ESB chose to ridicule Pavlik rather than give Hopkins credit where credit was due. BHop beat Kelly with his freaking feet, and he just did the same thing to Cloud. It seems to me that even ardent Hopkins loyalists fail to give Bernard appropriate credit for his footwork. His footwork is better than damn near anyone I've seen in over 4 decades as a boxing fan.
Mayweather has the best footwork today, Hopkins has the best mentality he knows how to play the game the best better than Tyson did, its as Atlas would say he knows how to con you into thinking he is coming for you when in reality all he wants to do is buy a little time and keep you from coming at him. He does it very well, and when he does come for you even in the cloud fight you noticed it was simply by moving forward sliding out and off to the side and allowing Cloud to throw and miss then he would counter Cloud. Hopkins knows how to slow the pace down with out even really working that much... and that has nothing to do with foot work it has everything to do with Ring smarts and knowing how fighters react....
