A lot of boxers back in the days had boxing fat. That's why the could go 15 rounds. If Pascal and such had a bit of boxing fat like SOlis they wouldn't gas. Remember guys boxing fat is different from regular fat for example chris areola
To whine about a fat HEAVYweight is exactly like to whine about sumo fighters being "weak", or like to claim sumo fighters doesn't have huge muscle masses under the fat layer, or even more like claiming sumo fighters doesn't use peds. Not sure if serious... When you have a guy who trains a lot and isn't ripped there's a fair chance he's an endurance sort of athlete with slow twitch fibres, that's why you can see soft looking guys with great stamina. A guy like Chisora is a perfect example, he runs every morning and basically trains how these old school guys did. As a result he had good stamina but lacked explosiveness and strength. Haye is the opposite and is very much a power athlete who uses sprints and weights in his training. Haye versus Chisora was literally like watching New school vs Old school. Haye could easily take some sting off his punches and fight at a higher volume for 15 rounds, the point is he trains at a higher intensity so fights with higher intensity, he throws bombs using his fast twitch fibres and that's why he appears to gas out at times. He is using up far more energy in each punch than someone like Chisora. He's every bit as fit but in a different way.
There were ripped boxers all the time but modern boxers have better nutrition, do weights which very few boxers did back then and have (better) peds
I remember Dundee commenting on Ali's conditioning saying it was superior to any of the fighters he trained in the 70s and 80s...the "ripped" thing is probably largely related to vanity as well rather than building a body for 15 rounds
Is a choice really. There are guys who are ripped in the 60s-80s to present. Bulky ripped muscle is for looks but is not that useful for boxing.
This was discussed in classics, but many times in the past, many boxers posed in ways that made them look think and lanky, but when you saw them fighting they look like modern-top boxers.
Except boxers aren't wrestlers and are engaged in a sport where endurance and speed of hand and foot are desirable traits to have in addition to strength, all of which must be balanced to best facilitate a fighter's particular style and natural attributes. And fat, excess amounts of it at any rate, has absolutely no benefit to a boxer whatsoever. It's a pretty weak comparison you're making, honestly. Not sure why you're going on about PEDs when fighters can attain a high level of lean musculature without them, and where a number of fighters busted for PEDs in the last few years have been fat or unimpressive looking individuals. Guys who aren't absolutely ripped to the bone I can deal with. Guys who are fat slobs who are obviously failing to put in the required effort I can not. There are more of those around now than in the past.
