Locche/Cervantes I - One Of The Greatest Wins Ever?

I love watching Locche fights on youtube.. Eyes just fixed on his brilliant movements, what a treat it would of been to see him Live

 

Somehow or another I feel that the escapees from the general forum are going to attempt to start practising "revisionist science" on Locche...

 

Jersey Joe, sometimes scoring can be so objective. How a person was trained and the region where they were trained to score. I score a fight (and I have been a ring official for many years) on effective aggression. As I said before, I don't score points for cute. Locche played that round while Cervantes pursued, chased and punched. He punched often, with success muted by Locche rolling with 75% of his punches. However, although the impact was nullified, he was still landing and was the only one attempting to fight. Which is what it is all about. I tell people I'm going to the fights, not, I'm going to a slipping, mugging at the camera, ducking contest. A Benitez-Palomino fight was brilliant. Benitez had a brilliant defense but made Palomino pay with his counters. In that 15th round, I don't feel Locche made Cervantes pay. Perhaps the other 14 rounds were not like that and, as someone suggested, maybe Locche played the final round only. I don't know until I see the whole fight. Words to live by was when I interviewed Georgie Benton. I made a comparison that he, Joey Giardello and Holley Mims were known as 'cuties'. He replied, "You can be cute, but you still have to fight."

The four criteria for scoring...

Defence (edge: Locce. Big time. Cervantes may have landed more punches in total, but he sure as hell didn't land anything that could really be considered significant or effective. In contrast, when Locce did elect to cut loose and throw punches, they generally connected against El Pambele. Locce's power was anemic, but his shots were clean. El Pambele's weren't.)

Ring Generalship (Edge: Locce. Yeah, he's clowning and that's going to put a lot of people off. Still, it's apparent that the style and tempo of the fight is the one that he wants, rather than the fight that Cervantes would obviously wish to fight. Antonio is basically reduced to following Locce around the ring, and when he does corner him, it seems evident that this is because Locce allows it, rather than because of anything that Cervantes does on his own.)

Clean, Effective Punching (Edge: Even. Neither fighter really lands anything effective in this round. Cervantes may land more, but they're glancing blows at best. Plus Locce lands at much higher percentage, and his shots are a lot cleaner when he bothers to throw them.)

Effective Aggression: (Edge: Cervantes. Locce played counter-puncher and defense. Cervantes chased, pursued and tries to make something happen. It's not exactly effective, but his attempts to initiate do win him this category.)

So, I would score that round in favor of Locce. He pretty much did what he wanted in that round, and made Cervantes look kind of silly in the process. Cervantes had his revenge in the rematch, of course, but had peaked by that point while Locce was on the slide. Still a very nice win for El Pambele, though...And he deserves credit for that win in the same manner that Locce deserves credit for his win over Cervantes.

What other fights of such dominance over a quality opponent comes to mind?

Kalambay dominating McCallum in their first fight. One of the most brilliant exhibitions ever.

Was going to say the rematch is what impresses me, if in fact Tony did take such a bad schooling and came back to stop him in the return.
