Joe Calzaghe has reiterated that he would only consider dropping back down to super-middleweight for a bout with Kelly Pavlik. The Welshman underlined his status as the best fighter in the world at 168lbs with an impressive points victory over the previously undefeated Mikkel Kessler in an epic unification title fight last November. Related Stories However, Calzaghe has turned his back on the division he dominated for a decade and is currently readying himself for a mouth-watering light-heavyweight showdown with Bernard Hopkins. After stepping up to 175lbs, and previously stating that he only intends to fight once more after his meeting with Hopkins, Calzaghe has little interest in dropping back down to super-middleweight for his farewell bout. However, he would consider it if a fight could be arranged with the current middleweight champion Pavlik. Im probably finished with super-middleweight. Ill have to wait and see. Ill have to weigh up my options after this fight, Calzaghe mused in an interview with Setanta Sports News. Im still the super-middleweight champion of the world but, realistically, the only fight that Id consider coming back down for would be against Kelly Pavlik. Hes an excellent fighter and he beat Jermain Taylor again earlier this year so thats the only big fight for me at super-middleweight. I beat the top dog in the division, Mikkel Kessler, quite convincingly so it was time for pastures new. And, after I sort out Bernard Hopkins, youve got Roy Jones, the winner of Clinton Woods against Antonio Tarver. Or, as I said, Pavlik. They're the only names that interest me. For the time being, though, Calzaghe is solely focused on Hopkins. The Executioner has generated much controversy in the lead-up to their Las Vegas bout, most notably by saying that he could not see himself losing to a "white boy". There are those that believe that Hopkins' outbursts have unsettled Calzaghe but the man himself insists he has been completely unaffected by the trash-talking. Talk is cheap. Dogs that bark dont always bite. I dont really care about the mind games or all the things that Hopkins is saying," he stated. "At the end of the day, if I go there and perform the way I can perform, Im going to win. Obviously, Hopkins has been around a long time and Ive got the utmost respect for the guy but hes 43 his time has come. Its time for him to retire and Im the man to send him into retirement. People keep saying hes getting under my skin but I think its been really funny. "For a 43-year-old man to come out with some of the things hes said is hilarious. "It might intimidate a 21-year-old kid whos just started boxing before but you have to remember Im 36 and Ive been in this game since I was nine years old. "I said to him already, you can be the bad guy in the lead-up to the fight but, believe me, when you get into that ring on April 19, Im going to be the bad guy!
Calzaghe obviously recognizes Pavlik as a good fighter unlike some Calzaghe fans. It would be a very entertaining fight.
Solely focused on the Hopkins fight and talking about Pavlik with a lil bit more than 20 days to go? Hopkins to work on Mosley's corner against Judah? I don't think either Calzage or Hopkins are taking this fight as seriously as I wanted them to...
I would love to see this fight take place. Granted nothing goes wrong with the Hopkins fight, and Pavlik gets past his next opponent, this should be Calzaghe's next move -- Pavlik vs Calzaghe. I'm a Calzaghe fan, but wouldn't be disappointed if he lost to Pavlik, or vice-versa. Pavlik is class. I think this would be an exciting fight if it were to materialize. Wonder where this fight would take place? Most likely the U.K, if indeed, it is Calzaghe's last fight. Would Pavlik travel to Wales?
His last fight was not as big a draw as expected. (Might be at the ice rink against Joe though) That is why Arum is trying to do a few things to make him a bigger draw. He wanted to get Pav on regular broadcast TV if possible and flatly stated NO PPV. I think that more than anything killed any talk with Winky for now. I really couldn't speculate whether Arum would consider this an acceptable risk to the 'hype train' he is trying to get rolling with Pavlik. (as Boo has stated, it has already been somewhat derailed by Duddy and Lee) Being champ at middle weight carries impressive company and comparisons. Personally I would love to see the fight to answer some questions, but I think I already know the answers. Power is its own skill, but you have to get the chance to use it. You get to view his last fight yet?
I see Calzaghe - Pavlik happening by the end of the year. Both camps have shown interest. Though I think (hope) we'll have Abraham-Pavlik first.
