Should Eddie Hearn Be Given Absolute Control Over Professional Boxing In The UK.

Oh dear

 

Eddie Hearn needs to be very careful he doesn't become a victim of his own success. It's all very well signing all these fighters but you need to make sure you have the time available to dedicate to getting each one decent fights. It could become a situation where his stable suddenly becomes a bit like Man City's squad, full of egos, with people squabbling over who headlines where and who gets what fight or what date in what City.

There's definitely a conflict of interest particularly for fighters in the same weight category, then there's the added problem of politics, someone like Froch in the prime of his career that has been a Hearn fighter longer than say Ricky Burns is going to possibly expect a bit more from Hearn than the others and perhaps will be pissed off if he doesn't get the same level of attention. I'm not saying that will definitely happen it's just a possibility and not something we can discount.

Hearn is only able to do what he is doing because the other major promoters in this country have been doing a **** poor job in recent years. Nothing to do with Snooker & Darts and Eddies Dad! Its time for them or somebody else new to step up there game.

 

I think that quite a lot of it is to do with Eddies dad, but I take your other points

 

If you genuinely believe that Eddie's ideal boxing situation isn't the same as what Matchroom have going on in snooker/darts then you're deluded.

I'm not saying it's necessarily realistic, but that would be his dream situation.

 

what matchroom are doing with snooker a lot of people involved in the game are not that thrilled with - not sure you can draw too many parallels with boxing tho

 

Theres so many difference between Boxing and Snooker/Darts, it would be impossible to replicate that situation. I think Matchro are smart enough to realise that, and your'e deluded for thinking thats what there doing.

Not giving Eddie much credit here. He has worked hard but he has got in thia position by default. The other promoters do such a **** poor job it makes Hearn look like some kind of King of promotion, when really he is just doing what he was supposed to be doing.

 

Yes because monopolies are always good for the consumers. Idiot. Let's imagine a fighter has a disagreement with Hearn, and wants to switch promoters, where does he go?

Eddie is doing what he is doing because he has the funds to do so, Matchroom make a fortune from darts alone which frees Eddie up financially to sign who he wants. other promoters are barely breaking even and cannot compete.

Sure the lad grafts and works very hard but there is nothing particularly difficult about changing the face of British boxing - all you need is most of the fighters and most of the tv dates.

Eddie is half way there but still along way to go and, it will all come down to how much sky are invested.

 

Such monopolies work iff:-

a) the sport is really unknown/new and needs to be 'demonstrated' to gain popularity (applies to UFC)

b) the sport has become endangered and only careful looking-after and shepherding will stop it from disappearing (applies to darts)

c) the sport is only practiced in one or just a few countries. (applies to darts)

None of these conditions apply to boxing in the UK because:

i) boxing in the UK is relatively healthy and popular, and growing in popularity compared to 10 years ago.

ii) boxing is international and the UK is only a small player.

Competition between promoters, given the state of the sport in the UK and internationally, is still the best way to grow it.
