You can't play boxing. It's serious and has health consequences if not done correctly.

Anybody can pick up a ball or kick one around.

Takes a different type of person to get into a fight than to kick a soccer ball about.

Very true. still don't change the fact most boxing fans on these forums don't know what the **** they are talking about.
Regardless of the situation, a footballer who has been playing striker for his high school or Uni team can still relate more to the likes of Rooney or Van Persie than some poster who never once boxed before relating to a boxer.

Once again.. it doesn't change the fact there is a lesser connection between boxing fans and fans of European Football or the NBA. Every high school guard have attempted cross overs, fade aways, short range jumpers. They can relate on the most basis of levels.. the vast majority of boxing fans have never thrown an upper cut outside of PS3.

Define "boxed before"? Popped down the gym and trained a couple of times, or had a fight?

Even if its simply going to the gym, most people would find going to a boxing gym a lot more intimidating than simply getting a football and kicking it around.

I personally can't follow sports I never participated in, I find it hard to relate to.

I don't know where those numbers come from, but they're obviously wrong. There's no way in hell that 79% of NBA fans play basketball on a consistent basis. All of those numbers are way off.

Obviously, boxing would have the lowest %. But most people play some pick up games of the other sports when they're young and that's about it.

Did people really need to conduct a study? seriously... this is not a sport for everybody one might have skills and know how to move in the ring and turn their shots over correctly does everything perfect in there but cant take a shot and in this sport that is a requirement

    Yup.

Football can be *played* almost anywhere with just a ball

Boxing requires correct training to ensure you don't pick up bad habits (which can cost $$) and the correct equipment is needed

Also alot of people arn't cut out for it...

What sports do schools do during their mandatory exercise periods? - Running, Football, Rugby, Basketball, Tennis

It would be very hard to incorporate boxing (contact combat fighting) into this...

I remember in secondary school (highschool) We paired up with a pair of gloves and pads (not wrapped hands) and the rugby teacher told us to just hit the pads lol

Didn't learn anything. Just ended up hurting my wrist after a couple of minutes

Not surprised. Part of the mainstream appeal for the sport comes from people amazed that men are putting themselves out there in such a way.

As many stated, boxing isn't as accessible as other sports although I'm not sure the numbers would change much even if it was.

anyone from 8 years old to 80 can join a rec league of sports like baseball/basketball/football. There is none of that in boxing, you have to go to a gym. And like someone else said you don't "play" boxing, to get in the ring and fight takes a different kind of human being. Not to mention if you're above the age of 12 and never boxed before, most trainers want nothing to do with you because it's too late.

    Yep.

Football (soccer for Americans) doesn't come near boxing in terms of brutality and brain damage. The goal is to score, not to hurt or KO the other team. That's an odd comparison.

As for the 'don't know what they're talking about' comment, it's true that actual experience in the ring must add to your knowledge of the sport, but just because someone hasn't boxed it doesn't mean they don't have a respectable opinion. Angelo Dundee, for example, never boxed at all.
