Well I dont think you can claim to have played football if you haven't actually played a game, competitive or not. The equivalent in boxing would be sparring, for an open spar most would probably have to train minimum of 3 months. That's a lot of commitment for a game.

Also you can play football recreationally, ie kick a ball around without any pain involved, going into a boxing gym, sparring or not involves heavy physical workout which brings the pain. Unless you mean boxercise...which doesn't count as boxing. That would be like claiming you did martial arts because you took Taebo.

Is 18 rounds of golf in a group of four, or slugging down the driving range.

Depends on what you define as sport or participation.

Is hitting a tennis ball against a wall the same as a tennis match with an umpire?

How would you categorise shadow sparring? It is a fundamental part of the sport but you can also do it in a bedroom mirror.

Statistics are bull****, 9 out of ten people enjoy gang ****.

It's obvious boxing will have a much lower % than these other sports, but I still find these numbers too low.

    exactly :good

There's also the part of accessability.
How many Formula 1 fans have actually raced any type of Formula car for instance?
Many young childeren come in contact with the nation's most popular sports due to friends, school, family etc.
And the part of a lot of boxfans being fightfans, who might or might not have done other combatsports (some on high level) while not having actually boxed.
