Does anybody see HBO eventually forcing Ken Hershman to retire?

140 is GB's strongest division but even at that weight HBO can still make some really good fights.

    Bradley
    Rios
    Alverado
    Allakhverdiev
    Provodnikov
    Shafikov
    Ajose

Just goes to show that they'll be fine without GB for a while.

it works well for the non GBP/TR promoters who will get a chance to showcase their guys and perhaps make some new stars. It's almost like WWF and WCW in the Monday Night Wars. HBO will bounce back.

People forget Ken Hershman was the guy who saved the Showtime boxing program. Back in the day he had a way smaller budget and far fewer subscribers to work with. His formula was to stop competing with the Greenburg runned HBO, where they were overpaying fighters with long term contracts. Hershman ended that and just went with the best possible competitive fights.

The nature of his new deal with HBO is such that his influence has only recently started and the old Greenburg/Davis decisions are now gone.

GB was using HBO as a farm system for guys like Broner, Alvarez, Russell and Thurman to take easy fights for big money. At the same time they were under cutting HBO ppv's with low cost Showtime fights. What HBO did was absolute neccesary. Now let GB try to figure out how they'll get their fighters the paydays and tv dates they expected to get before. One thing, the quality of Showbox just went up and we should see some quality fights on CBS. GB just won't make the money they thought they were going to and some of their key guys are likely going to be put in some tough fights and maybe take some losses.

Yes. Hershman has ****ed himself. HBO has shown themselves to be stubborn and self righteous in the past so expect them to royally **** things up for 24 -36 months before they understand they are screwed and reverse course.

Who wants to see that crap. I see two good fights in that mess. You need fights to put asses in seats and you have very little name recognition for non obsessed fans.

With an open market promoters are encouraged to develop fighters since there is less chance the fighters leave when their contract runs out. When GB had guaranteed dates other promoters were more likely to try and cash out their fighters since they were probably going to GB when the contract was up. I really hope the smaller outfits are willing to truly develop their own guys now.

Since when has cutting off a monopoly at the knees been considered a bad thing?

Good on HBO for calling enough with GBP and Hayman. They will win this war and Showtime and CBS will lose this gamble by overpaying for the Mayweather fiasco.
Between DiBella,Goosen,Fatboy Shaw and K2-not to mention the top promoter,Top Rank,HBO will have plenty to choose from.
GBP has shot themselves in the foot.

As you saw this weekend, sometimes it's about the fights and not the fighters. That's new to HBO, that used to be Showtime's thing, but looks like Hershman took that with him to HBO.

Ultimately this split will be bad for boxing, and will further drive a wedge between GBP/TR.

There will be SOME great fights made on either side, but we wont get what we truly want until this GBP/TR war ends.

Hershman has been sucking Arum's **** for years, but it's ok for him to be running HBO. :-(

What's the story on this? I didn't notice TR having any exclusive deals with Showtime when Hershman was there. Their 2 tournaments (S6, bantams) both featured 0 TR fighters.

As much as GBP has been ruining teh sport as of late, especially with teh Ring rankings that came out.. we tend to forget that Top Rank started this cold war between GBP.. and Arum is number 1 in destroying the sport... and that's who HBO wants to side with?

Except that Khabib is locked into a mini tournament with Guzman, Presscott and Mosquera..and even if he wins (and I think he should), then he's still out of the match-making position till the end of the year. at the earliest.

Some other good fights can be made though, if HBO and the various sanctioning bodies are so inclined...
