How good was Wayne McCullough's chin?

Wayne's chin was concrete ' n he had the heart of a lion. Whatta warrior 'n good guy.

 

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, it's an 11! We're talking Atomic Bull McCall level chin!

 

Truth! Was one of my faves for years. Just unbelievable the amount of punishment he took w/o so much as a flinch. Felt bad in one of his last fights vs. Scotty Harrison. No way did McCullough belong at 126 then. harrison looked like a freakin WW compared!!! But he took the blows, and never stopped trying to win. Warrior personified.

McCullough had issues with a cyst on the brain (as I'm sure most of us are aware). However, during what can only have been numerous tests/scans the Pocket Rocket was told by the doctors that his skull (or some part of it) was twice the size of a normal person. Almost certainly this led to his chin being what it was.

Wayne even said something like 'you can teach or train that'

 

An iron chin and an unbreakable will.

I read an interview where he spoke of the time he was most hurt in the ring. It was one of his less celebrated fights and he said you have to make a conscious decision not to get knocked out; he just wouldn't let himself be stopped.

I'm sure he had to make that decision several times over his career, particularly against Harrison. The fact he wouldn't be KO'd in that one proved the only thing tougher than his chin was his heart.

The pocket Rocket had a hell of a chin.

Side Note: Before the Hamed fight he said he didn't think the Prince hit very hard. After the first round he came back to his corner and said that he hit like a horse.

 

To my knowledge Harrison used to rehydrate to something very close to welterweight around this time. I remember the sky commentary team would always stress how massive he was at the weight. McCullough's chin is like something from irish folklore.

 

Watch his fights with Hamed and Morales, he took some punches in both fights that would KO a lot of fighters and just kept coming. Tough as they come.

 

Cast Iron. Took huge punches from the likes of Hamed, Morales, Harrison, Yakushiji and Bueno.

Incidentally, he suffered a perforated (or damaged at least) eardrum in his fight against Bueno, and never appeared in serious trouble. Considering the disorientation that this type of injury can cause (Price is an obvious example), it's another example of how uncommon his punch resistance/recovery was.

Bizarrely, out of all the fighters he faced it was Victor Rabanales who hurt him the worst. According to McCullough he didn't know where he was, but he managed to weather the storm and go on to win.

 

Always see Wayne smiling ringside at Vegas fights. Very accessible 'n down to earth. Signs autographs 'n talks with fans 'n their kids.

 

Always came across like a super nice guy.
