If that class was just eliminated could boxing survive?

In my opinion most certainly yes. And Im not talking about just hardcore boxing fans.

This thought came to me when talking to a mate who isnt into boxing. He was able to talk the ear off me about the upcoming Calzaghe fight, how badly mayweather battered Hatton and that asian fella pacman who s tearing things up, but he asked me "what s the deal with Klitschko, has he not fought in ages?"

I personally think boxing can do just fine without the big men (even amongst the casual fans). I cannot remember the last time I was genuinely super-pumped for a Heavyweight fight. Probably Lewis Vs Klitschko. that s 5 years agon!!!

Isnt it already? The little men rule, long may it continue, **** the HW division. Boring fights, lacklustre performances, weak division, fight once a year, no charisma, the list is endless as to why I hate the division, at least Haye stepping up makes it slightly interesting. The little guys rule the boxing world, yet the are probable under appreciated, especially in respect to the money they make

Personally , i think the Heavyweights make boxing a lareg part of what it is, it adds an air of mystique and notoriety , remember some of the worlds strangest fighters were heavyweights (Liston, Johnson, Ali, Tyson.. ) we have had a lot of lighter weight fighters of the same, Greb , Ketchel, Tapia etc.. but i think i'd be pretending if i said Boxing would be as great without the big fellers.. I could enjoy boxing the same but i know a lot who couldn't .. Its a very good question though.

I personally couldnt name one CURRENT HW that actually inspires/intrigues/fascinates me in any way! Even on a technical level they are pretty damn ****. The fights are poor, and the correct matchups dont get made often enough. Compare that to the little guys, you have trilogies, people stepping up, going down, more exciting fights etc (I know HW cant exactly go up and down a weight, but couldnt they get in shape?)

I just dont care for the HW division, and I seriously wouldnt notice if it wasnt around :good

    Heavywhats? Huh?

What are these 'heavy waits' you speak of? Do you mean just the heavier weight classes like middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight? I think those are very important to boxing, but the idea of adding anything heavier than that is a waste currently I think!

I think the heavyweight division plays a huge part in boxing. A huge part. Admittedly we no longer have the Lewis, Tyson and Holyfield type characters any longer but it's only a matter of time before a new crop emerges. In my opinion no other division has been debated like the heavyweights. What would the response have been had this question been asked in the mid 90's? At the moment the current crop do nothing to excite the imagination, and I'd say this domestically and on the world stage. However, boxing needs the heavyweights.

Yep. I sure if a few more middleweights put on some weight, they can complete too like Toney is doing lol.

Boxing needs it's flagship division, the Heavyweights, to thrive IMO. The "glory days" of the HW's may be gone though and it'll probably take unification to restore the division to prominance.

yes! in fact the cruiserweights can fill in the slot for that. Means no fighter would ever exceed 200 lbs.
