My 1st time at the echo last night and 1st off what a brilliant venue for boxing. I was surrounded by scousers and they all seemed fine. Considering the rivalry and how close the fight was, no segregation plenty of alcohol an no security it was bound to go off. No one got the better of anyone from what I saw. Few scuffles quite quickly over with. Would of happened if it was in Manchester as well at a guess. There would be a full on riot if Fury and Price ever get it on. Don't have a problem with the Manc lads not staying for Bellew either. Thy paid there money it's there choice. Was obvious they were only there to see Crolla
I think it's big boxing cards in general now. I can't believe how poorly stewarded/policed it is. It's a free reign for football fans (hooligans) to get smashed and kickoff.
I've always had a really good night there. It's just that on each occasion something has gone off. Though most of our trouble at Bellew vs Cleverly happened outside the arena, being chased half the way across town by some pretty mean looking scousers. The fact that we were supporting the scouser was irrelevant.... given that I was with a group of (generally) United supporting Mancs.
I think it's ingrained in some people to attend sporting events to support your town/city, drink lots, snort lots then your group fight the opposing group. They used to do it at football but trading punches inside a football stadium will now get them 3 or 4 year prison where as doing exactly the same in a boxing arena will get them thrown out at worst.
Too many football knobheads seem to attend boxing shows. "who are ya?" booing anyone and everyone, bit **** really. A bit of needle is good as long as it doesnt go overboard but sadly loads think attending a boxing fight makes them a hardcase aswell.
I think thats the crowd you are always going to get at a 10,000+ attendance card. To get that number of people going to a fight you are attracting non-boxing fans and lads out for a **** up.
It's kicked off every time I've been at the Echo and that's pretty much every card shown there I think. But it's a bit naive to say it's just scousers-they're no angels like but most of the fights I've seen have included people from all round the country.
Free for all. I'm not arsed about people taking coke in the bogs but if trouble ever really got going there then the security is woefully undermanned to deal with it.
There was a bit of trouble starting to sneak in the Belfast boxing shows lately but at the Frampton Martinez card there was a highly visible and numerous police presence around the arena and thankfully it passed off with little incident. It doesn't matter what city it's in there's always wankers who can't behave themselves when they're on the tear.
