Scott Cardle lack of power

new professionals tend to not get ko's these days because not many set their feet or stalk, imo

 

He's only 24. Cleverly hasn't had a problem with it, he's grown over time in that aspect.

I haven't actually seen Cardle, and that's the best way to assess a fighter's prospects.

Power is one of many attributes boxers can have or not have, as long as he's well equipped in other areas who's to say he can't progress?

 

Lee Selby only scored one stoppage in his first ten fights. This kid is still learning. He might have to learn how to sit on his punches more, throw the right shots at the right time etc etc. He may have little power but I wouldn't say it's a concern.

 

Its a concern, how much of a concern depends on what your expectations are. If you're talking about eventually becoming world class, its a massive issue. There really aren't very many fighters that make it to that level that can not punch. And let's be clear about this, with Cardle we're actually looking at somebody that doesn't have a punchers technique, so he's not going to develop power until he overhauls his entire punching style and mentality, so a lot of these comparisons with Selby etc are not that apt. I havn't seen a lot of early Selby, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't throwing with snap, it may just have been that he was fighting conservative opponents or perhaps other factors, but I'd be shocked if he wasn't throwing with conviction and technique and suddenly he fights Stephen Smith and then all of a sudden we see a change. I wouldn't expect to see Selby punching like Cardle is after 10 fights.

It's not too much of a concern if you reign in the expectations. You can operate at British/European level without much power, if you're good enough. You still need to be better rounded than a guy that can punch, that goes without saying.

In a more broader sense, I havn't been that impressed with him, even seeing him live. I think he's going to have a hard time under pressure. He does some nice things but I remain unconvinced he's quite skilled enough and talented enough to deal with somebody thats going to outgun him.

 

He could bang in the amateurs

 

Do people think Chris Eubank Jr will suffer from the same problem? Seen him land a few clean shots with his feet planted and the other guys have took it and covered up. For me Eubank Jr has a lot of things going for him,his age being one of them. His lack of power does concern me though

If you're going to critisise fighters for not having a huge punch then at least get your facts right. Cleverly stopped Hawk, and whilst he might not be the hardest of punchers, he's done quite well for himself so far.

 

I dont think its much of an issue really. I was at the Rose Harris bill in Blackpool he scored a pretty devastating bodyshot knockout. The fighter had only been stopped 3 times and had previously gone to decision with Marisili.

My advice would be for fighter with perceived lower power to work on their bodypunching. Look at Ricky Hatton for somebody who wasnt massively powerful but used the bodyshot to his advantage.

 

Not at all, there are numerous world champions that have not carried any power. He looks slick and quick with good reactions.

He's a bigger puncher than he was when younger.

 

Exactly. I wouldn't say he has one-punch power, but he's definitely got enough of a wack to keep opponents honest.

 

It wont be a massive problem as power isn't a neccesity to get to the top however I think he needs to make big improvements if he is going to progress much further in pro's.

Not a surprise at all. He's said he will go down to super featherweight, his next fight is a 135. He is flabby at 140, he's dropped and hurt a few guys, he just doesn't seem to have that killer instinct.

Wasn't it the Sky commentators that said he wasa puncher in the amateurs?
