I'm guessing Prizefighter is an attempt to engage new fans by using the shorter and supposedly more exciting format like Matchroom have done with Snooker. Since this is extremely unpopular with the large majority of fans, what would you do to bring in the much needed wider audience?
Competitive fights, good build up, and good presentation will get people interested. Nothing more than that needs to be done. At the moment we're not getting enough competitive fights. That's the main problem. Build up and presentation are absolute gash. It's not just about the fight but the total package. You need to create an event. Boxing needs glitz, it needs class. Not tackiness and cheese, which is what we're getting.
I agree but that's more the way to engage the casual fan than those non boxing fans. I'd suggest a contender type thing, they done the same in the UFC which helped new fans understand the sport and get to know some of the personalities.
prizefighter belittles professional boxing...there should be no more than one fight for any boxer on the night.....for me, the way stallone and sugar ray leonard did it with the contender was the correct way to do it...although without the very annoying camera cutting to the audience's faces when action was going on in the ring
Look what the contender did for Alfonso Gomez and what the Ultimate Fighter did for some of those guys, UFC do that well, it really makes a difference to KNOW the fighter, rather than just "oh this guys good you should check him out" cus then he's just a body in a pair of boxing gloves
100% agree!! It was The Ultimate Fighter that got me in to MMA, didn't have a clue about it before and built an understanding and appreciation for the sport and people involved. Maybe a 24/7 type thing for all the events, just something that helps us buy in to these guys.
The type of music you can expect to hear from HBO (just loud enough that it makes an impact but you can still hear the sound/commentary). Classy, epic. That's how you create an event and a story. [yt]Wa6vvYOq-gE[/yt] The type of cheesy shite that you wouldn't be surprised to hear on sky/boxnation as they show highlights vids of Calzaghe slapping his way to questionable stoppages in some place that looks like a glorified leisure centre. Tacky, low quality, depressing, grim. That's not how you create the total package. [yt]1vhBKIo-ZBQ[/yt] :verysad and I agree about "knowing the fighter". It can make a massive difference, but it has to be done well. Like Tyson Fury said, it's not just about boxing, but the total package. If a boxer is a character, he can go mainstream. I think Tyson Fury is one of the characters in the game at the moment. I believe he'll be a superstar one day. Then I'll bump this thread.
You know what I'm surprised Matchroom haven't started a show similar to The Contender/Ultimate Fighter It's certainly a good way to introduce new Boxers or old Vets to casual fans and would give a greater insight in to the Boxers and more importantly generate interest, create feuds and most importantly create stars. I'm not completely knocking Prizefighter but to me It as become very stale maybe reality series would be a better venture.
I think in theory Prizefighter is better than what it actually is, I'd be interested to see what viewing figures they're doing. I'd like to see 8 guys train on a Contender type show then fight each other 8/10 rounds as part of an ongoing knockout tourney on the undercards of some big shows. That would create more excitement than your average undercard walkover and be a good way to introduce some new personalities as well as give guys a chance to establish a fan base. Get it done Eddie haha
It would be interesting for Sky to do a sort of tournament format. 6 or 8 rounders in the first round fights, then in QF and SF 10 rounders and then a 12 rounder in the final with a paycheque at the end and maybe a title opportunity. Would help get fans interested. The average British person who loves reality TV, give them reality TV and turn them into boxing fans. The Contender was good but too American and cheesy for my liking with the theme music playing constantly and the shots of the fighter's families grimacing and interviews where they talk about being battered as a kid by their father. It was like watching an underdog film and lots of people will be turned off by that. I personally don't want to know a fighter's life story, I just want to see him get in the ring to see what he's made of so I can make my own mind up. The UFC have definitely got the right idea with the Ultimate Fighter because UFC president Dana White is a very clever bloke. It's a tournament like the Contender but with a few tweeks to make it feel more serious and insightful. Sky should give it a try if then can afford it. Have two rival boxers coaching it. It would be amazing to see Amir Khan lead a team and Kell Brook lead another. Carl Froch would be made for that sort of thing too.
Yes there is an alternative to Prizefighter, its called watching paint dry and I must say its a lot more fun.
Great post. I didn't watch The Contender but what you say about UF is spot on, it gives you great insight to the sport. Your layout for the tourney sounds good too, and I think the reality tv thing is a big attraction in this country like you say. This would surely would beat PF in attracting the audience to boxing.
would you believe he was actually against the idea initially. the first Ultimate Fighter was also a huge success because of the fact that the final was an absolute war, but it wasn't just the fight itself, we'd gotten to know and love both Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonner over the course of the show, so it made the two of them knocking lumps out of eachother that much more powerful and meaningful, rather than just another great fight between two random fighters
Prizefighter was great when it started but has been done to death, like a lot of you are saying some kind of reality tv show like the Contender would be great
