Is Golovkin really as good as people say?

That would be a great action fight, from first bell to whenever it ends.

Golovkin not being a big enough name is a fair excuse if your reguarly fighting bigger names. Martin Murray, Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker were also not big names?

Should be a top fight, Macklin will give him problems.

I'm not saying Sturm is some kind of superstar with global crossover appeal...but even based on fighting Felix and fairing okay I'd say Murray and Macklin picked up some notoriety in the context of this division.

Like I said, Golovkin was fighting Fuchigami and Lajuan Simon only last year in Europe, so the fight has not been screaming out to be made for a long time. You're probably getting that impression from the fanfare GGG attracts from hardcore fans in the last year, and even that is based on disposing of fairly limited foes.

I think we'd be stretching the point to say the fight has been a no brainer for a while, Golovkin is only just getting any kind of momentum and that is more based on his activity and performance level. Not everything you want to happen will happen right away, and it might not even happen at all, but at the very least its better to be patient in the early stages, especially in boxing otherwise you're liable to get pretty frustrated. You might say that if Golovkin/Martinez shows no sign of being made this time next year, and Golovkin has continued to hold that title and dispose of opponents, it would be a lot more disapointing.

We're talking about different kind of fights here. The Brit fights were nowhere near as potentially big as Golovkin-Martinez, they were considered fairly routine defenses.

Golovkin has a title after all, though it might be made of paper. HBO obviously recognize how good Golovkin was, and took a chance on him someday being involved in very big fights. Its no exaggeration that with the right kind of build up Golovkin-Martinez could potentially be one of the best fights of the middleweight division for years. I think its premature to throw the two of them in the ring together now, as top quality as they both are.

Given everyone is ducking him, yes he quite clearly is as good as some are making out.

Boxing is a business, you fight whoever brings in the most money, Golovkin has fought no one and only hardcore's know him, he needs a big win and its not a 50-50 fight nothing Golovkin has done proves he is elite yet
I think he gives Martinez a hard fight but Martinez will win most rounds, he couldnt even stop Rosado properly and you expect him to be 50-50 with someone as awkward and athletic as Martinez

Punches really hard, Stays in punching position pretty much all the time. Punches with speed and authority and class.

Defensively a tad open but he takes the risks over guys don't. Maybe over compensating because he's strong and punches hard he's fine with taking one to give one.

World class, Needs world class opponents at MW to truly stamp his authority on division. But he's the goods..

    I rate him highly.

I have a lot of his fights in HD and the facial expressions say it all, the guy is a killer. he gets you on the hook then you don't break free unless you have the heart of someone like Rosado.

He was knocking guys out in the amateurs with head guards on, how often do you see that?

He is a wrecking ball and it is going to be very interesting to see how Macklin approaches this fight.

Hate to say it but I don't think this will end well for Macklin.

Great fight Macklin-Golovkin is, Mack has a pair of cast iron bollocks, accepted the fight when no one else would.

This will be the third world champion he's fought in his last four fights, he's not taking the easy route by any means!

I think he is. He is great in so far as none of his punches are actually range finders or setting you up as such, he sets you up with his feet, very subtle footwork, and he rolls with whats coming back at him. He has no interest in merely touching the other guy with a jab, he freezes you with it..Its hard, snappy and totally offsets opponents. Easy to get hung up on his power but he has serious ring smarts.

A lot of the pundits Stateside are comparing his style to Chavez sr.

Does anyone here see the similarities?
