I like this post. Many years ago,I remember great boxers of the 60s like Als Dad,Walter McGowan, and Howard Winstone on the BBC against dangerous, top ten men.No title involved, just fights to get a title shot. This would never happen today for whatever reason.Cowboy McCormack, who was good but below the standard of these men,was on one night against Henry Hank,an absolute dynamite puncher.Down early, got up to win.Similarly Harry Scott against the Hurricane,on the BBC.Good days.

Not top 10, but Chad Dawson fought on the Calzaghe- Lacy undercard.

It's nice that out of the whole list probably the best fighter to have fought here was Ray Robinson and when he did fight here against Turpin in 1951 he was the prime Sugar Ray, he'd only lost once to La Motta in about 70 fights or something and Turpin out boxed and out fought him, it wasn't a dodgy home town decision or anything. Great performance by Turpin, they still have a statue of him in Warwick I think! SRR also came back later in the 60's and got beaten by Downes but he was old by then and right at the end of his career when he was fighting for the money and was totally shot he got beaten by some journeymen in show case type fights.

Maybe towards the end of his best years but he was 30 and had only lost once.

Also,Jonny,he came to GB and beat a boxer.Think it was Johnny Angel. Then Mick Leahy beat him on points.Mick was a great crowd pleaser, one of a few near world class middles we had at that time. One thing about Robinson I remember in those days was that although he looked a shadow, none of the up and comers he fought,or some world class men like Giardello and Archer, were able to stop him.
