That wasn't the real Donaire last night...

When has Donaire ever popped the jab with any consistency when forced to take the initiative? There's a reason he's looked less than stellar against Mathebula, Vazquez, and now Rigondeaux. It's because he is a counter-puncher through and through and has a lot of difficulty pressuring against defensive ring generals. The offensive fluidity he shows when countering aggressive fighters gets stunted and he's not the type of fighter who can slip and parry shots whilst attempting to work his way into more favorable positions (either on the inside where he doesn't excel or in corners where he effectively cuts off his opponent's exit routes). His body attack isn't consistent either. If he doesn't work on this, it'll only get worse and worse as he moves up in weight and as his incredible athletic gifts start to fade with age.

 

He didnt look as fast because Rigo showed great movement and did not allow him to set his feet

Donaire has had little success with his jab against southpaws in the past. That aspect of the fight was not surprising in the least.
