Well, allow me to start off with Jorge Castro. The former middleweight champion was reported to have done roadwork for the first time when he challenge Terry Norris. Imagine this is a guy who was 67-2-2 when he challenged Norris and for almost 70 fights, and amateur bouts he never did any roadwork. :yikes Amazing natural stamina.

Then let's move on to Nino Benvenutti. I was read that he never used mouthpiece his entire amateur career and it wasn't until he went to America and underwent a physical exam that they found out he never used one. Cool stuff.

Care to share some of yours? Let's keep it serious please. :good

Roadwork is overrated. If you spar daily you'll pick up all the stamina you need. A boxing match isn't like going on a run.

id assume boxing is mostly anaerobic, and you could build up stamina from sparring but will take quite some time. Sprints are great for stamina.

Ring stamina is a big part mental.

Always breath, stay relaxed and be efficient.
Boxing is not that demanding in terms of pushing your physical limits, if you stay calm like JCC or Salvador Sanchez you've already done a big part of the work.

Training is still the most important thing, but mentality makes the difference between just good and being great.

By your logic, all boxing exercises are useless if they aren't like having a boxing match.

Overdoing sparring is not good. Sparring is essential, but you need to be careful since it wears you down overtime. Look at fighters like James Toney, a great defensive fighter but you see him with slurry speech. It's because of oversparring and having gym wars. Meldrick Taylor is another example.

Sadly, many of the best defensive fighters of the modern era suffer/ed from the same fate. Exceptional defensive skills are generally learned and mastered the hard way.

Sparring might give a guy stamina, but you have to spar a lot to do it and then the guy is worn out from gym wars and not actual fights.

    Some basic ones:
Joe Louis was the first black man to play pro golf in a PGA Tour event.

Carlos Monzon was shot in the leg by his wife in 1973. Went 6-0 after.

LOL im guessing you have never boxed. I can tell you its the hardest thing ive ever done by a country mile. You can be extremely fit but its a different ball game when it comes to boxing, hitting a heavy bag for 30 seconds can be exhausting and they don't punch back.

Also you dont need to do road work if you dont want too, there are other methods of improving your cardio. Sprint training/Fartlek is great for this and you can do it on a track to save damaging your knees by continually running on concrete.

What I meant to say is that there are other sports that put certain aspects of your body to a much bigger limit.

100 and 400 meter sprint for example, once their body starts going down they can't rely on their brains to do the running, in boxing you can rely much more on your brain.
    See Bernard Hopkins.

He's right, roadwork is completely unnecessary for a boxer. You don't cycle to get fit for a marathon and you don't run to get fit for the tour de france. Why people still think you need to run to get fit for boxing beats me. Fitness adaptations are very specific. Heavybag, pad work and sparring is everything a boxer needs to get in boxing shape. Roadwork very likely detracts from that more important work if it isn't programmed properly.
