I have noticed a similarity in Marciano's style compared to Tyson's. Does anyone know if Tyson modeled himself after Marciano? -I know he was a fan. Also who would have won between Marciano and Tyson, both prime.? Double question, but I'm up late and drinking beer.

At first sight they are similar, but upon further investigation, there is a world of difference between them. Marciano often leaned back, let his opponent come into him and then strike with full power. He had a very strange way of avoid getting hit but it was pretty effective, considering he was in firing range most of the time. I'm working on a video to point out some of Marciano's sublte defensive manouvres that are easily unseen. Tyson on the other hand, was more of a textbook fighter, hands up high, bob and weave, set things up with the jab, etc.

Also, later in his career (post 1954), Marciano seemed to have stopped throwing one big KO bomb at a time, but threw an enormous amount of 'normally' hard punches. His punch output in the Walcott fight was little over 40 punches a round; i don't have exact numbers, but i think in the Charles and Moore fights, it was 50, 60 or more. You will also see that his one-punch knockouts and other quick KO's took place in earlier fights (Walcott 1952, Louis 1951, Layne 1951, Walcott rematch 1953, Matthews 1952), while in his later fights, he wore his opponents down and knocked them down several times enroute to a stoppage (Lastarza 1953, Charles 1954, Cockell 1955, Moore 1956). Tyson was not a wear-you-down kind of guy.

I think Tyson idolised Dempsey more than Marciano, and his style resembles Dempsey's a lot more, too.

Tyson Modeled himself after Demspey, the shaved sides and no socks but he admired Marciano....Very good post, some excellent observations:good

I have seen Tyson be very critical of Marciano accusing him of being a dirty fighter.

Rocky was never intentionally dirty.Just crude and rough. Being a swarmer, he naturally always didn't land in a legal area of the body.

Tyson would knock out Marciano easily. Tyson was the best inside fighter of all time in his prime.

Mid and inside are often seen as the same.

Sometimes people mention Tyson his uppercuts that he was a beast inside, though uppercuts aren't limited to the inside see: Ricardo Lopez

He hit Jesse Ferguson with every uppercut in the book and still couldn't put him away

Tyson rested too much on the inside. He allowed himself to be tied up and was also the one holding more than people may realize. He was explosive coming in but he didn't stay in there and work like Frazier or Dempsey, Armstrong etc.

Anyway Tyson would KO Marciano. Too big, too fast, too strong.

Tyson has always claimed Dempsey was his idol and you can see that he modeled his style off of him. IMO Dempsey was the blueprint and Tyson was the evolution

As much as I would like to see Marciano knock out Tyson late, it just wouldn't happen. People are assuming Marciano could withstand this insane amount of punishment that he would have to endure. Mike has nearly every advantage over Rocky, aside from Rocky's heart. Chin, power, combinations, speed, defense, strength, foot speed, etc. The only thing is Rocky's stamina.

He would put his arms behind the guys if it got into the late rounds letting them hold him so he could get a rest, he wasn't that amazing later on in the fight on the inside like some other heavies

Tyson was trained the D'Amato way.

That means he was trained to be like Floyd Patterson

Not alot of room for engineering your own style with that guy. He knew what he thought boxing should be.
