I think he beats prime Ali. Marciano has over the years turned into most under appreciated former champ. Take night he beat Walcott--no one else wins under those conditions, fighting blind due to foreign substance in middle rounds.

He gave Charles brutal beating in both fights (and charles gave him a pounding in first bout) but split nose is only thing remembered. People fuss over weight, but when guys fought more bouts out of weight classes, and before crusierweight division, many guys in 180's beat bigger fighters. Cruiserwight division was invented to make money (one more title to sanction) not to help smaller heavyweights.

Frazier would knock him out. Marciano is perfect for Joe Frazier - he's going nowhere and he's there to take the punishment. Rocky might get up a couple of times, but Frazier would win pretty soon after the first knock down.

1969-1971. If Joe had not started drinking and slacking off on training after First Ali fight, he would have extended that prime. Frazier in 1968 was terrific too, so maybe 1968 gets included, depends on when he fought Bonevna (to me)

At their very best, I'd have to take Frazier.

Frazier in the FOTC was just as tough, determined, and dogged as any version of Marciano, and probably as well conditioned. He was also faster and probably a more technically proficient interior fighter(He sure moved better and picked better spots).

However, if you were to give me a span of, say, 3-4 years, and we reached down and picked each guy at random from that span, I'd bet money on Marciano. He was always consistent. Frazier had one night where he was nearly perfect, and several nights where he was very good, but he also had more than a couple where he wasn't really on at all.

Honestly I have big respect for Marciano, but the Joe Frazier from FoTC would shut down Marciano like he did Terry Daniels and Manuel Ramos.

What is the evidence that Joe began drinking and was less deditcated following the FOTC?

these 2 on the top of the list of my favorites...Frazier had an excellent left hook but Marciano had a great hook and a fantastic right hand. I think this is an excellent fight while it lasts but Marciano wins it by KO, just too much power and the right hand is the weapon that takes Joe out Marciano by KO

I don't know about the drinking but his weight ballooned about 10lbs. He had started a singing band. Two things that distracted from his focus on boxing. Joe didn't have a lot of room for error because of his size and style of fighting.

Eddie Futch commented on Joe not being as driven in training camp preparing for George Foreman in Jamaica.

He also had health problems and his family and even manager were in his ear about retiring.
