Would Jimmy Young have any sort of a chance against a peak Tyson?

Look what Cooney did to him? Are you kidding????? Young was way past it, he was right with Cooney in that fight. Cooney was deceptively quick with awesome power, much more than Mike I believe. Cooney had a rd and a half with a bling Young and couldn't hurt him. If Young didn't get that nasty cut, I believe he'd of ended up schooling Gerry, maybe not too, but Gerry shure didn't kick his ass, young was blind! Tyson/Young 15 rds. When boxing was for men, not boys. I give Jimmy a good chance to beat Mike. Young could handle fast hands, power, mental games and mental cases. Would not be shaking in his shoes like so many others were. Mike punching fast and sharp, but after a few rds of hitting nothing but air, then start getting countered by straight rights, mike gets discouraged, maybe tries to take a bite of Young's ear. By rd ten, Tyson is tired, Jimmy winning rds, maybe knocking Mike down or out. I definatley don't see Mike walking through Jimmy Young! And ecto, I've heard of Jimmy sparring with Mike, could you tell me more of what you know about this?

Frazier did not have the speed of Tyson and Tysons hardest punch was his right hand he had a lot more punches to use than Frazier did to hurt Young...Combine that with great speed and i find it hard for Young to be able to block most punches of Tyson for the fight.

I wansn't talking about slipping a jab or right hand i was talking about Tysons combos up close, the 4 to 5 punch combinations...

True...a bloody, blind and past it Young was standing right there in front of a prime Cooney and WAS NEVER HURT by any of those punches. This fight is an excellent example of what a great chin Jimmy had. i think Young would have been in his usual survival mode vs Tyson...and he readily confessed in a SI Vault interview that he always "fought to survive"...and more than any of the guys who managed to take Tyson to the distance, I think he would have truly frustrated him...pulling every trick in the book along the way.
As for Cooney, indeed, without that cut, Young would have scored a monster upset.

Jimmy had the smarts to take a prime Tyson the distance.

Absolutely. Young fought a slew of incredibly dangerous fighters, and was incredibly difficult to stop. I don't think Tyson had the discipline to really break him down while being frustrated.

He would soundly outwork him trying, though. Tyson moved to much and moved his hands to quickly to be completely shut down unless Young was actually active himself. Which he never was.

The Foreman Young beat was sleepwalking into counters. Wasn't fighting well. I don't think Tyson would turn in a lackadaisical performance: He always fought hard, even if he didn't always fight smart.

It is funny how you people saying Young has no chance because Shavers beat him. Well Tyson was stopped by Douglas a nobody who Tyson fans will tell you was one of the greatest boxers in boxing history.

Tyson never had a peak. Beating glass chin light heavyweights who were afraid of him like Michael Spinks isn't a peak.

Tyson would soundly bust him up.

Mike ate up 200 pounders, particularly those without a punch.

I think the Spinks analogy is useful: Ali himself said "I don't think Tyson will even be able to hit Spinks. He's like rubber." Spinks was famous for spoiling, making great fighters look bad, finding a way to win.

All that went out the window when Tyson was unleashed...

Spinks is alot less proven at heavyweight compared to Young. He went life and death with a past prime Larry Holmes, beat up a unmotivated Gerry Cooney, and some other bum before getting KO'd by Tyson.

Young actually beat up big, prime heavyweights. He had a different more effective defensive style. He actually proved he could take a heavyweight punch, Spinks couldn't. Young would last the distance and steal a few rounds on the way.

I thought spinks would beat Tyson, I think he would beat him if they fought again after the first one. I don't believe in lucky punches, so, mike nailed him good and got a great win, but I don't think he would have a second time. Young would have frustrated mike to the point he would have needed psychiatric help after the fight.

Exactly. Young doesn't see the final bell. He's never faced an offensive machine the likes of Tyson.
