Naseem Hamed versus Barrera. I think that Naz was naturally the faster, quicker fighter - and he often depended on his speed combined with his explosive power. Barrera stayed on top of him all night and timed him superbly.
Sanchez vs. Nelson might be worth a mention here. Although he didn't get the decision he deserved, Victor Echegaray caused Kuniaki Shibata a lot of problems with a well timed, long straight jab. Greg Haugen against Vinny Pazienza the first time round but especially the second time round is a perfect example of a slower fighter with better timing befuddling the quicker fighter. Haugen vs. Camacho was more a combination of Haugen pressing a hard fight and Camacho being kinda flakey at that point. Haugen's timing wasn't that great in that fight imo. A good losing effort where a fighter closes a big speed/athleticism gap through the use of good timing is Billy Graham vs. Kid Gavilan. Ultimately I think Kid's physical gifts were too much but Billy caused him a great deal of trouble in their third bout.
Norton-Ali. Norton's own jab and his own punches weren't as fast as Ali's, but he knew when and where to throw them to make them just as effective.
Think that was more just Graham's overconfidence, dodgy ring-generalship and slop+ jackson's power. He charged at jackson chin up in the air throwing out a few telegraphed measuring shots.Obviously thinking he was finished. Most competent fighters could have landed in that situation. Mind you, i suppose you could easily say the Norris fight was more because of his power and terry's chin than just timing vs speed, which would be true.i just liked how he took advantage of slight openings so quickly in that one.
Vernon Forrest, Shane Mosley fiht #1. Forrest used that sharp jab to keep the distance he needed and after the fight when asked how he did just that to control Mosely`s speed. I remember he looked in the camera and said, `jab` !! Use your jab to control your opponent. Great job in taking Mosley`s O ...
No matter how old and slow Duran got, his timing mysteriously never abandoned him. He used it to hand Paz Vinnie's first career knockdown, and is widely considered to have won the first match with Camacho Senior. Foreman didn't miss as much in his old age as one might might have expected. When he pulled the trigger, his accuracy was pretty efficient, in contrast to the wastefully wild missing of his youth. Gil Clancy has been criticized for shortening up his punches after Kinshasa, but was commentating from ringside when he witnessed his former charge knock out Moorer with precisely the type of shortened punch Gil had taught him all those years earlier.
Both excellent calls. I was so happy when Duran KD'd Paz. I think I woke up the entire house. Duran did well against some quality fighters in his 40's, Paz and Camacho (both of whom I thought he beat) and Jorge Castro who was just 18 months separated from a belt.
Hopkins/Pascal II? Even though oddly Hopkins looked like the younger one. Garcia/Khan? Tyson vs Biggs/Tucker Camacho/Trinidad Mayweather/Judah Wanna say Basilio-Robbie 1 but will rewatch that fight soon good stuff.
