I think boxing alone can bring some people over. You certainly aren't buying these channels for movies. A lot of people would rather wait for the TV shows to come out on another medium and watch them all at once. Live boxing, though, you either pay up or watch a shitty stream. Also, I think it's about trying to take HBO's status as the more prestigious channel. It's not just the boxing matches themselves, but people knowing that the bigger stars have moved to Showtime.
That's going to be Oscar's problem. Not as many subscribers = not as much money for fights. The fewer the viewers, the more justification Showtime will have to hold the line on their offers. I look for Oscar to want more than Showtime is willing to pay for an upcoming fight. Soon. It will suck for him, but he's a businessman and he'll make the call to HBO.
I give the dominance of HBO for a couple more years. Once Pac, Martinez, Marquez, and them all old ****s retire it`ll start to lean towards showtime.
LOL at the morons who think people sub to HBO and Show Time for boxing. Boxing is now a NICHE sport in the USA. lmao.. Nobody sub to HBO for BOXING. Ya brah Imma SIGN UP FOR HBO? For what dawg? Game of Thrones?Movies? Soft core Porno dawg? What is ur favorite? NAH BRAH IMMA SUB TO HBO TO WATCH TIMOTHY BRADLEY fight some OTHER MIDGET..:roflnut:nut Yo mom.. CANCEL HBO NOW.. WHY SON? becauase DA MONEY TEAM @ NEEDS ME. nut
HBO has more subscribers it is that simple but Showtime is hoping boxing will help them get into more houses
Showtime will never pass up HBO in terms of being the premiere cable channel. It will always be in the shadows of HBO. Mayweather got himself a great deal, but Showtime just paid/guaranteed way too much for an aged fighter.
I think slowly, over time, Showtime will become a more powerful sports broadcasting station. Change takes time. HBO is grateful they haven't lost everything yet, but they certainly aren't laughing their asses off. Their only stars are Sergio (who's 38), Top Rank stars (who are all old), and Andre Ward (who can't fill a high school gymnasium). Showtime's power will increase with time.
They wouldn't have boxing on if it didn't bring in subscribers. Live sports are becoming more and more important for TV in general, while you can wait 20 minutes to watch Game of Thrones after it airs. These are very good numbers for Showtime and as long as they are increasing subscriptions that's all that matters. However i'm not sure how Floyd fits into this aside from bringing in hype and prestige. People know that he will only fight on PPV, if anything, Showtime should have given Canelo a guaranteed contract and have him fight on Showtime and the occasional big money PPV for the next 5 fights. With Mayweather, his guarantee is enormous and if that 1 million mark is needed just to break even then they will have a hell of a time selling him vs the 140 class & Alexander on PPV. Guerrero is not a draw either but at least he has some momentum (Berto fight had good viewership), he is hispanic, and most importantly this is yet another 'comeback' for Floyd coming out of prison and his debut on a new platform. All that is gone if he fights again in September, unless he goes up and faces Canelo.
:deal This forum is a buch of homos "this wont sell, that wont sell bla bla bla" Whats it to you? Shut the **** up and just watch the fights. Its not your problem what so ever.
whats the source?? I'm not buying that Bradley had more viewers. Now more people around the world have Hbo compared to showtime so in that sense it could come close but i highly doubt the Bradley fight had more viewers. and if he did its really because more people have HBO
A few years back I'd just order showtime or hbo the night of the fight and cancel the next night, get charged like .67 cents. Unfortunately they don't allow that anymore haha
It was already well known that HBO had more subscribers than Showtime, and Canelo just set the record for Showtime. That's already a great start. Change isn't going to happen over night. As long as GB keeps putting on great cards, the subscribers to Showtime are going to greatly increase. People are really underestimating the importance of the Latino fans. GB has the best Latino fighters in the sport. You can bet your ass that there will be a **** load of people subscribing to Showtime just to watch their Latino brethren fight. Add to that the black demographic since GB has the best black fighters as well. Top Ranks stars are old and aren't even as big of draws as their GB counterparts, so Showtime and GB will be just fine.
