I don't feel the need to diminish a really good boxer's accomplishments. He had a good career with lots of entertaining fight and I thank him for that and hopes he recover well. His first fight against Sergio was amazing, I need to rewatch it as soon as possible.

He'd slipped, which is exactly why he was picked to fight Saul Alvarez.

Famous quotes from George Peterson (William's trainer)

On the KO punch from Sergio:
"It is a punch that is not seen. You can't make an adjustment for something you cannot see," Peterson said. "It's like the wind blowing. We can't see the wind, but it's there. I have been hearing quite a lot about that punch and if we made an adjustment. You don't go to the gym every day and practice for a punch you don't see. It's as simple as that."

Speaking via ''Fighting Fit'' magazine, Williams Trainer, Mr Peterson says that Paul only spends 10% on Boxing Techinque, and the other 90% on conditioning. Peterson says ''Listen when you learn to throw a jab etc, you know it for life'', there no point doin going thorugh it all again''

Is this why Williams defence & boxing skills are so bad, because he isn't focusing enough on learning new techiques in the gym?

But the bottom line is that you can have the greatest boxing talent in the world, if they are not taught the skills, they will never achieve their full potential. He was never taught the skills to utilize his tremendous physical attributes, he fought like a 5'7 guy, that's why he got clocked so much. Nobody in their right minds would train him to be an inside fighter, it didn't correlate at all with the body type he had.

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT! And guess what? In the fight with Lara, he was getting clocked by that same overhand left that Martinez had clocked him repeatedly with in the 1st fight, and knocked him out with in the second. Literally against Lara he has no defense against that shot, he just ate it over and over, depending on his iron chin. It's clear his trainer made no effort to train him correctly, or fix any flaws, it was basically just him going out and fighting like a brawler... He fought just like Margarito did.

Why was he so defensively open? Because he ducked his head in when he punched, didn't take any advantage of his height or reach, and fought completely illogically for his body type. The premise of this thread is how he was wasted, what a rare talent and specimen he was...

    Amen.

Sure seems like it... and Paul Williams is a legitimately nice guy, maybe too nice... He doesn't know how to get rid of people who are no good... Loyal to a fault honestly.

Paul Williams is like one of those "Boom or Bust" type of draft picks in the NFL draft i.e. Ziggy Ansah...All of the athletic potential to be something special, just needs/needed "coaching"..3, 4 years down the road, you'd see what became of him....Well, he had **** "coaching" for one thing but he also shares alot of his own blame in that no matter how many times he would be given "advice" from someone "Why don't you use your reach, your height, why don't you try to box your opponents?" He simply won't do it because he doesn't want to. He always said he wants to have exciting fights, bring excitement. He is the really the Anti-Hearns without the 1 punch KO power. Tommy could box beautifully and KO with his right hand. Paul gives up everything and just want to brawl. Good, decent career. Hope he is doing well and continues his recovery.

This thread is not directed at diminishing anything he accomplished, or towards being derogatory at all towards Williams. I am a huge fan, and am disappointed that he never got the proper training, if anything I am complimenting the tremendous potential he possessed. I find it incredible he managed to accomplish so much fighting completely contradictory to all his advantages, and having never received proper training.

I think it comes down to arrogance in a round about sort of way. Williams at 147lbs was phenomenal. Tall, amazing work rate, just a real freak of nature at the weight. As they moved up to 154 and then to 160, they banked on that same athleticism being enough to see him through, not respecting that as Paul moved up in weight, his size would become far less of a factor as he'd meet bigger and stronger men.

He needed to add skills to his Armor and regardless of if we blame him, his trainer or his manager, they all failed to see that.

Thanks for posting this, I am just flabbergasted. All the conditioning work showed, he was definitely a stamina beast, but the lack of time spent of refining his boxing skills shows too. Only 10% of the time spent on training his boxing skills? That's an abomination...

Williams was not one to be arrogant in any way, I think he simply never got proper training. He was great at 147 in terms of accomplishments, but still was very technically flawed. He won fights due to overwhelming guys, and having an iron chin, he still wasn't utilizing ANY of his advantages. The difference in moving up in weight was the guys got taller, making him even easier to hit, and they hit harder too.

His trainer should have been brought up on charges for not correcting that or even addressing it in the gym. I mean it was surreal to watch him get hit with that same punch over and over again that damn near killed him one fight earlier. I hope his trainer is never allowed to ruin another fighter again.

You really don't see that he should of realized?

There has to be accountability to the fighter on some level, to realize that he needs to change something.

Yes the size was the difference, obviously. Williams should of worked on a plan B.

Williams was far too trusting and loyal for his own good. He should have fired that bum and went on to seek a real trainer. Someone like Steward who was good at teaching tall and long guys how to use their height.

I totally disagree with that. The man was born to scrap. he became a champion with a **** trainer. Just think if he had of had a Manny Steward behind him. He would of eclipsed Tommy Hearns. Not in power but in everything else.:bbb
