Paul Williams was wasting his talent before his accident...

His damn trainer refused to help him fix things, and I'm not sure Paul was trying too hard himself either. Same shot that Martinez hit him with multiple times in both fights, Lara continued to clock him with the next fight. Hope his trainer never gets hold of another fighter.

The trainer's taking too much of the blame here; Paul was a fighter, not a boxer. People are assuming a fighter can change his stripes way too easily.

If Paul wanted to track down a different trainer to improve his skills, he could've. At some point, the fighter's got to take responsibility for his choices in how he handles his career.

So, hypothetically, say Manny got a hold of him. What good would it have done? Paul seems to me like he was like Andy Lee, where he'd go through the motions properly at the gym and then throw the gameplan out the window once a fight broke out. That's just how he's hardwired.

Which talents was he wasting? His best attributes were being very tall, having very long arms, and being very skinny. He wasn't exceptionally fast, didn't have great power, didn't make adjustments during or in between fights... If he was short, he'd be the complete antithesis to Hearns. To me, he made the most of what he had. His only mistake was moving up in weight too quickly and not draining to 147 for as long as his body would allow.

When he fought people close to his size, he didn't look very much like a worldbeater.

I'm not sure you can take a fighter already at the world class level and teach him to "fight tall" while expecting him to do it with any real fluidity. We'd have likely wound up with a gangly looking Klitscho.

Void will probably fight Paul Williams as long as he is in a wheel chair. I hope Williams walks again though, Void will never fight him then...........

I don't think it was wasted talent. Fought Margarito, Martinez, Wright, Quintana and
Lara. A very nice career. He was who he was and he had a lot of heart.

I think Williams simply wasn't good at fighting tall. Having a specific physical attribute doesn't mean you have the ability to use it to its fullest extents. Also you need to take it into account a fighter's natural inclination. If a tall fighter is more comfortable fighting on the inside, you can spend years teaching him how to use his height and reach and he'll probably still revert back to his old habits. I think it's best to let the fighter develop a style that fits his natural tendencies.

some tall guys don't fight tall. Corrales did use his height to leverage a good left hook, but he didn't use his height. Although reach is more important than height usually. Hagler was only 5-9, but he had a 75 inch reach being southpaw, and then Milton McCrory was 6-1 1/2 and his reach was 72.
