Jogging my memory a bit, he was definitely highly touted, just not a highly touted amateur. There was a lot of talk on the scene about the little Asian kid in Ingle's camp who was going to make everyone forget Herol Graham. Ingle (in all fairness) is a bit of a gobshite, and some time before Naz turned pro he was telling everyone who would listen that Hamed was going to be his greatest ever fighter. I remember there being some debate (possibly in the trade press) about lowering the minimum age for boxers in the UK, as some people were arguing that the 17 year old Hamed was capable of beating Robbie Regan (British flyweight champ at the time and future European and WBO champ). All a bit hazy, but there was definitely a lot of hype and whispers about him before he turned pro. Probably more than any non-Olympic UK boxer that I can remember. Hamed's fight against John Miceli was the first to be televised on ITV I think (not sure if it was live). The Belcastro fight was live on ITV and got great viewing figures, and he was well on his way to becoming a household name. He had achieved celebrity status well before winning his first world title.
dude got big headed that was his downfall and he fell in love with his power should have never left ingele
I ran into him in a pool hall in New York years ago. Very nice guy, cockyness and showboating is the character he built up. Exciting fighter to watch too. That fight vs Kevin Kelly was classic.
Met Nas in Dublin way back when he fought Manuel Medina, got an autograph and a few photos taken, was a pretty surreal moment as I was just a kid and he was a hero of mine.Proper nice guy and nothing like the person I saw on tv.When the cameras were on he knew how to turn on the style, the entrances, the knockouts, the showboating he was definately one of a kind and dearly missed.
Amazing how much Nas has inflated post-retirement, haha, the lazy chump. Great fighter, one of the most entertaining
People seem to forget about the incident with the car crash and concentrate more on his weight nowadays. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...Mkc7MIjXlC52DVz3kHNH8kQ&bvm=bv.45960087,d.d2k
