Is Khan mentally a bit simple?

Mayweather is the single biggest fight out there for anyone in and around 147. Nothing wrong with him talking it up to try and catch Floyd's eye.

Fighters don't tend to have a lot of perspective. Why does everyone keep picking on Khan?

Why do people talk about Diaz as a "former lightweight" as if it had any bearing on the fight last week given that Khan was also a former lightweight? :huh

 

Some more than others though, Khan is ridiculous.

 

Schafer constantly talks about Khan/Mayweather as well. It's only natural that Khan's then going to be asked about it. Then he has to give a reply and no one's going to say they're not good enough. Hell, even when Matt Hatton/Floyd was touted lol, Matthew said he'd have a chance.

 

Khan might make a good tune up fight for Mayweather

 

Listening to Khan speak, it's pretty easy to decipher that he has well below average intelligence.

 

I think there definitely is something wrong when that ambition doesn't match your ability, a bit of realism wouldn't be unwelcome. Khan is borderline deluded if he thinks he can beat Mayweather, put in a few good performances against top competition and then maybe he can dare to dream, right now, that kind of talk is just a fantasy.

 

All fighters talk themselves up and of course Amir isn't going to say "I'd be battered by Floyd". Just how he says it though, it really rubs people up the wrong way because there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance and Khan frequently comes across as the latter. Bangs on about how other fighters fight bums yet he goes and fights Molina and Diaz (who's not a bum but was still well past it). Recently as well when he said the Diaz fight would probably be his last fight in the UK. He said that in order to get the big fights he needs to go to America. But that leaves us Brits thinking "why, are we not good enough? Do you not want to bring big fights over here for us like others have done?"

Froch is the same a little bit, he comes out with some stuff that makes you think "WTF Carl, are you daft?" like when he talks about how he'd beat Ward in the UK when he clearly wouldn't. An example of a fighter who is confident in himself but doesn't come across as an arse are guys like Ricky Burns and Saul Alvarez (even though he's got Golden Boy's ludicrous amounts of hype too).

Khan's a guy who's just been lied too by all the jackals around him like De La Hoya and Asif Vali, they've blown so much smoke up his arse that he needs the fire brigade.

 

I agree he's not going to say "I'd get battered by Floyd" but really why talk about Floyd at all, it just makes him sound deluded because he's a long way from being in a position to challenge Floyd, let alone defeat him. Also, the whole "I'm not fighting in the UK again" statement, if his career trajectory continues the way it is, he'll be back here sooner then he thinks.

I'm trying to be nicer to people on here, but I read this and want to put my head in my hands. When have fighters EVER been realistic? It's a confidence sport - what do you expect Khan to say? "He'll likely tune me up in four rounds, but I want the payday, and that's the sacrifice I'm willing to make."

What had Guerrero done to allow him the confidence to beat Mayweather? Katsidis, an ancient Casamayor, BERTO?

People are really hard on Khan. I'm a little tired of seeing the constant "look what Khan's said now" threads. He's achieved more than any other active fighter in the UK, possibly barring Froch. We keep hearing about Froch's "amazing" record, when Khan actually did something similar.

Kotelnik, Malignaggi, Maidana, Judah - with nary a break, at a much younger age. He came undone in a fight he was unlucky to lose (Peterson) and lost to a guy who's looking more and more impressive with each fight.

I don't get the constant hate. Sure, he's a bit of a prat at times, but he's an exceptional athlete and a damn good fighter on his day.

 

He'll mention Floyd like most fighters mention the top guy they could fight, champ of the division or whatever he may be, it's just what people do, partly hoping to set up a big fight and payoff down the road, partly to talk themselves up. He's still, what, top 5 at light welterweight? It could happen. The fight with Mayweather has been talked about by Golden Boy for a while, before his setbacks, so obviously it comes up.

The guy does put his foot in it though, the whole thing about not fighting here anymore is a good example, why say it and alienate fans? He's not a big draw in America I don't care how many stories of him being stopped in the street get trotted out on Ringside. That was why he had to fight Peterson in Washington, to get a crowd in so they could pay his guarantee. One more loss could finish him as a contender then all he'll have is this country.
