The guys in the media -- who are there to sell and promote the fight -- aren't exactly gonna' come out and say "to be honest, Guerrero has no chance and shouldn't be in the same ring". They have to sell their stories and TV broadcasts, and to do that they have to push the idea that it's a competitive fight.
Yeah point taken but who does mayweather take credit for fighting then Remember if Guerrero hadn't lobbied for this fight so much it probaly wouldn't of happened Castillo,de la hoya,Marquez, hatton, gatti, corrales, mosley, cotto,Ortiz,Guerrero and many more I expect somebody to rip his previous opponents to pieces now, just remember there are only a limited amount of elite fighters in any division let alone your own.so the next level down such as Ortiz and Guerrero is not a problem for me.these are guys who at their peak and hungry
The only place Guerrero is a bum is in the general.. Floyd is the greatest fighter I've ever seen (in my generation) I'm chuffed to bits he has another 5 fights ahead of him. Gonna enjoy it whilst it lasts.
Yeah, he has a great resume. But his decision to retire when the welterweight division was red hot (Cotto, Marg, Williams) and not bagging the Pac fight, will always be remembered. That's the stain he has on his legacy - always managing to conveniently miss those fighters that posed the biggest threat to him. The very least he can do now is fight Alvarez next.
He's not a bum, but obviously well above his best weight and never had the ability to trouble Floyd. Most of those picking him were considering Floyd was on the slide. My position has been the same all the way through. It was a terrible fight to make, competitively speaking. Guerrero's only claim to the fight was beating Berto, who I think it's dreadful anyway. Ortiz wasn't a great fight, but at least he was bigger than Floyd, which provided some interest. But he's a headcase and always has been, so that was never going to be competitive. Guerrero was out of his depth, but that was still a brilliant performance from Floyd. He gave him nothing to work with all night.
Bernstein made a great point. People pointed to Cotto's success as a measure that Guerrero would have success too. But Guerrero isn't as rounded, talented or technically skilled as Cotto. He's an elite level fighter with experience against the absolute best out there. Of course he had some success, but not a huge amount. Guerrero had even less and was fighting Floyd at his most comfortable weight.
I dunno. Hatton was a big fight. He signed to fight zab who was the man at 147, he lost to baldomir, floyd beat him then beat zab. He has beaten cotto, and marg and Williams arguably proved not to be quite as good as thought at the time... He beat Mosley when Shane was hot again but then people said Shane was old PAC is the big miss but then PAC refused to do the tests ( I think, I know the story ran and ran amidst all that bull****) I was hoping that fight would happen and PAC would beat him ... But hey, floyd suffers from a heap of revisionism, if we're fair about it the PAC fight didn't happen because manny didn't like needles... Come on, that's bull**** As much as Guerrero wasn't a genuine test you watch floyd and he's just different class He has wasted a number of fights on sub par opponents but he has also won a bunch of supposed big tests at a canter It's hard to really uncover the truth of it all but he's clearly a great fighter I suspect he suffers because he wins so easily, in most great fighters stories you have the adversity and the overcoming of it as a narrative, floyd has been too good for that Though I thought Castillo won their first and clearly enough too Just hope he can line up some good fights in this next 2 years
Hatton was a good fight. Floyd fought Judah first, after he'd lost to Baldomir. He fought Baldomir after the Judah win. He beat Cotto when Cotto had taken two awful beatings and was looking pretty shopworn. Not when Cotto was at his most fearsome after beating Mosley. "He wasn't as good/would have beaten him anyway" - That's the cry of the Floyd fan. What happened later is kind of beside the point. Floyd could have been the guy to show them up and he didn't want it. Shane had looked on the slide against Mayorga. The beating he put on Margo was brilliant, but there was a lot more to that as we now know. A bad camp, the hand wraps, etc. He was a year out from that and, throughout the fight, it was obvious he couldn't pull the trigger anymore. He was huffing and puffing before he landed that monstrous right. Floyd kept changing the terms of the tests. And why did Pac have to respond to Mayweather Sr's baseless allegation? You're applying a bit of revisionism yourself. The Pac fight didn't happen because Floyd and team were deliberately obstructive. It was a great performance. Some. He is, but the truth is there pretty plainly in the contemporary press reports. That's true, I think. But his cherrypicking hasn't helped. I thought Floyd took it. Me too.
Great post above from trotter Mayweathers never really faced adversity and the greats have all been knocked down, beaten and come back again.they have also faced a succession of greats themselves Both sugar rays and Ali in the modern era are defined as great not just because of their wins and ability but also grit, bravery and guts The thing is as it stands things have changed and floyd fighting once a year recently was more a money thing than his legacy defining as he puts it He has an opportunity to change that now, make the fights at the hardest level possible but floyd is intelligent and concerned about his future and health so if it's khan And Alexander I'll still watch and enjoy as they are world level opponents But it won't make his place In history much higher
@ dftaylor yeah i agree on your comments. And my **** memory got the zab and baldomir fights back to front. Great time to move up, at the time in hindsight. And I am being revisionist on the PAC negotiations but while I thought floyd was being a punk at the time, and it's only my opinion, in my heart of hearts I have some suspicion of Mannys rise through the weights now as I do Marquez lately. I'm aware that in the end manny agreed, supposedly, to the tests. Just a massive **** up all round and we all missed out on a fight for the ages, it would have been immense as an event and a fight. I suspect in the end floyds career will remain what it has been post gatti, a conundrum, smoke and mirrors and question marks. @ ginger warrior - He isn't going to change his habits now is he, as much as we can hope for the dream matchups he will cherry pick opponents to take part in the floyd farewell tour. Frustrating.
If you dig around a little to the contemporary reports about Floyd, he got a lot of credit until he jumped to 140. It was probably after the Gatti fight that he started getting serious slatings for picking iffy fights and putting on dull performances. Floyd pre-140 is a monster for anyone, H2H.
Guerreros certainly not a bum but hes nowhere near a top p4p fighter no matter what the Ring mag says the only reason the fuss about him being a poor opponent died down was the fact Devon Alexanders name was mentioned as a possible Mayweather opponent and compared to that Guerrero seemed a respectable fight but now Floyds had his comeback fight he should really have a superfight in September. ps. I honestly think Kell Brook would beat Guerrero.
