Anybody else surprised by how accurate Guerrero was to the body?

I don't think Guerrero was landing to the body as much as you are saying. His gameplan was shitty because he was hesitating between rushing Floyd and boxing with him. Too much waiting. Not enough variety. Guerrero is just too bland and too slow. Great performance from Floyd.

 

Guerrero is clearly an intelligent fighter, he just lacks the ability.

 

In the early rounds, Guerrero was definitely getting in a counter left uppercut to the pit of Floyd's stomach, somewhat like Lucian Bute's counter left uppercut to the gut. After the first few rounds, though, it was nowhere to be found.

 

Wouldn't doubt if that thought crossed his mind in the 8th round

 

Agree, if we look at his body work the fight wasn't the one sided beat down it's being made out as. Floyd totally takes over by round 8 though.

 

If anything he was guilty of headhunting floyd which is a big mistake everyone makes over and over which I pointed out before the fight.

 

I don't think so. I really think Floyd took the steam out of him with some hard right counters and lead rights. Not to mention he ate some nasty body shots as well. Those add up and had Guerrero hesitant as Floyd was getting off first and when Guerrero did get off, Floyd was not found or blocked with his arms. Accuracy and speed is what hurt Guerrero and made him hesitant. He discouraged him and softened his will in the ring.

When it was all said and over, he didn't have much to say other than to speak about his faith, etc, since he pretty much was completely schooled and didn't want to discuss the schooling.

BTW, I really didn't expect much from Guerrero at this weight or any weight below against a fighter at Floyd's level. Thats what happens when you fight someone who can do everything that much better than you. Heart, chin, don't matter as much when all other attributes are lopsided in one fighter's favor.

 

I'm not saying he landed a lot, but he landed more than lots of fighters and didn't seem to miss much there. His game-plan was shitty because he was in one gear the whole fight.

I agree, he came to win but ultimately just couldn't.

 

Not something I noticed. Not surprised if it's true though, because Floyd didn't use his shell defense like at all. He was more hands high or hands outstretched and moving.

Also, jabs to the body do not count as bodyshots.

 

Guerrero hurt Floyd to the body in rd 2 or 3. Floyd backed off and held his guard tight and was trying to not show he was catching his breath. It was a straight left right in the gut. Floyd returned the favor the next round though. That is how you tell if Floyd takes a clean shot he HAS to answer right back. That could be considered a flaw in his game. Same as when Mosley buckled him.... Floyd went after Mosley as soon as he got his sense back.

I don't remember seeing it but others have mentioned it and commentators did too.

 

I noticed. Round 1 he landed a nice uppercut to the body and almost at Floyd''s solarplex.

 

Guerrero had a solid gameplan with the body attack early on. Countered every shot upstairs with one or two down-low. Oscar De La Hoya had the same strategy against Shane Mosley the first time. But after the first couple rounds Floyd adjusted. He would immediately move after throwing (to take the steam off Guerrero's body punches or make him miss entirely) or he'd cover up his ribs right after throwing. And I loved how he would lured Guerrero in as he backed against the ropes and then smothered his punches until Guerrero was basically concentrating on hitting Floyd's back in the latter rounds because that's all the target he could find . Still, a very solid idea.

 

Are you serious? Its not hard to be accurate when someone is giving you that spot to hit.

 

It was pretty good early on -- until Floyd started to sit down more on his punches.
That really rattled Roberto to his core. He was practically gun shy after getting hurt by those solid right counters (and one nasty left hook too).
