I just want to ask anyone that might have been around in the 70's if there were the same complaints about George foreman?

I know no one likes to her people point it out but George had 30 plus fights and he was fighting guys with losing records, one had a 1-14-1 record and another a 3-24-1 record (I don't know they could have been better than their record suggests) and this was a few fights before he fought for the title.

So does anyone think that is a disgrace as I've heard wilders progression described as?

About a year or so into his career, Foreman faced George Chuvalo - a former contender - on the downside, yes, but still durable. Two years into HIS career, Wilder was hitting the canvas against 4-2 fat slob Dustin Nichols and 17-20 mediocrity Harold Sconiers.

Wilder STILL hasn't faced anyone remotely as good as George Chuvalo was in 1970!! :patsch

There is no comparison. Wilder has faced some of the most pathetic opposition for a longer time than any contender than I can remember. And I've been following boxing since BEFORE Foreman retired for the first time. :nod

Wilder is brought up extremely slow.. recent examples would be Klitschko brothers!.

They were fighting in Europe and you could say their former promoter wanted to keep them safe like many european fighters... but Vitali was like 24-0 when he faced Hyde for WBO belt... he was 27-0 when he faced Byrd.

Wilder already surpassed that beating absolute no ones.

Both brothers already had won the WBO title (comparable to the paper WBA regular nowadays) inside 4 years, and beaten some quality opponents.
Foreman just over 3 years pro had beaten Joe Frazier (as called upon) and had Chuvalo and Peralta (twice) on his record.
How is that comparable to Wilder? :blood

Wilder 4½ years pro may, or may not fight Dereck Chisora...

George fought a lot of stay-busy type guys coming up, but he had beaten some pretty decent heavyweights as well like Chuvalo as others have indicated. He also began his pro career in late 1969 and won the Heavyweight title off of Joe Frazier in the beginning of 1973. Wilder started his pro career in 2008 and had basically beaten nobody until beating the shell of Audley Harrison just a few weeks ago as a baby step-up fight. There isn't much basis for comparison in my view.

Even I don't try to defend Wilder's resume.

!

- but the thing that IS aggravating is that some idiots on ESB actually blame Wilder for this.
Anyone with even a slight understanding of the boxing game knows how hard it is for young fighters to get quality opponents, with all the politics and corruption involved.

- and it's infinitely harder to get good opponents when you have massive power & no track record.
Wilder is the classic "High risk / low reward" type of fighter.

To blame him for not facing better opposition is just moronic.

While there might be some truth to this, it does mean that Wilder must still be considered unproven. Furthermore, it would be naive to suggest Wilders team don't know how valuable his perfect KO record is and are doing their best to extend it, that's just good business. Especially so if they're not sure of his long term prospects and want to make sure he gets one good payday. I'm not a hater, I fact, I'd love nothing more than Wilder (or anyone else for that matter) to be the real deal at HW, I'm just not sold at the moment.

No we have to blame Wildrs team. They dont think Wilder can compete with a decent opponent. It is very clear that they are happy that Wilder knocks out bums inside 4 rounds. And Wilder is happy to. You can put pressure on you promoter and manager. You can even change them if you want. Happens all the time.
THERE IS NO EXCUSE! 28 fights and we dont even know if Wilder is any good. We just know that he has a long powerful right hand. It is really laughable.

Wilder not not even faced one single decent journeyman. Of course all are ducking him.

I his 33rd fight,Foreman fought this guy. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=137&cat=boxer

This was who he fought before getting his first title shot against Frazier. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=144&cat=boxer

Wilder isnt the first to have easy fights at the beginning of his career.

Wlad Klitchsko first 25 fights, were incredibly easy too.

In his 4th pro fight, George Foreman TKO'd an 18-4 Chuck Wepner. Yes, the Rocky Balboa Chuck Wepner.

Somebody already mentioned and broke down George Chuvalo, a good win.

Also before his title fight, he beat Gregorio Peralta twice. Actually two of Foreman's better wins in his whole career. While no top 10 contender, Peralta had a great resume for an experienced South American, losing and drawing with Bonavena and also beating the LHW champ at the time just a couple pounds north of 175, forget who it was.

I mean, even a guy with a padded record like Boone Kirkman shows up in Foreman's pre-title days, and he'd be Wilder's best victory to date. (yes, I've always known he was there on a couple guys' resume, but I did boxrec this one to get his name)
