Where has anyone said that in this thread? :think

I think Khan made a good decision to leave Roach because clearly he doesn't have the attributes of a Manny Pacquiao (good chin or even good enough offense) so defense is vital. Now it looks as though the decision came too late and saying "you cannot teach an old dog new tricks" appears to apply to Khan.

You could understand why Khan was leaving he was at least trying to improve an necessary area in his fight game, I can't see what Cotto gains from leaving Diaz and I definitely cant see what he gains by going to Roach.

    Explain it to me.....

Why is it that whenever a fighter changes trainer, people always have to assume that's them blaming their trainer for their loss?

Maybe, just maybe, they're doing it for self-development and trying to find a match that they think will benefit them?

Cotto is taking the same route as what you mentioned there. Now why would not Roach be not beneficial to Cotto?

If it's about lacking defense, then I think it's not a very strong argument. Roach once trained Virgil Hill who was a successful defensive fighter.

also James Toney had his second best run (cruiser-heavy) under roach. I didn't once see roach unteach Toney defense.

its not going to matter roach is just going to get him in shape an give him a game plan for the fights he has left I don't mind the move as for khan I think he looks alot worse with Virgil than he did with roach in my opinion so am not sure that was the best move for him.

Roach adds nothing to Cotto....he certainly won't improve his defense....most of his fighters catch shots with their face. He may help his offense a little but the reward in offense is not going to be worth the loss of defense and footwork.

Roach has proved with his marquee fighters that he does not teach defense well at all I think Ray Charles could see that!

Yet Diaz helped him improve areas of his game...:think

    Also, you never stop learning.

Also, everyones learning curve is different. Some learn young, some learn through experience, etc, etc.

I'm 100% confident that Roach could teach Cotto something he has never done before, throw a combination he has never thrown before, employ footwork he has never used before, employ a training method he has never done before.

I dont know if Khan looks worse but he certainly hasnt improved....the next fight for him will be crucial if he doesnt improve at a much faster rate he will never win a title again.

My complaint is I do not see one area that Roach will improve with Cotto....I think he is moving out of petulance.

I agree... Plus Freddies style would be very bad for Cotto as Roach doesn't emphasize defense and Cotto bruises/cuts easy. Its really getting out of hand how fighters (and I respect Cotto a lot as a champion fighter) change trainers when they dont look impressive in a previous bout.

loss of defense/footwork? how will cotto forget 30 years of training in 8 weeks?

as for khan I think roach actually improved his defense from what it was... I remember watching khan against some British white boys getting his ass knocked and chased around the ring and I don't think those dudes were anywhere near the level of kotlenkin, Judah, maidana or Peterson.

its the new thing in. nowadays conditioning coaches and trainers are looked upon as masters.

It's like a fighter isn't allowed to think on his own and adjust unless the coach tells him what to do.

if a fighter wins the coach was great if he loses the coach needs to go. pathetic generation we are in.

SMH. Wrong style for a shopworn fighter.
