I had an ominous feeling for Burns tonight

Gonzalez hit Ricky with everything he had and he couldn't put Burns away and that broke his heart to an extent, he lacked the experience Burns has.

For a nice guy out of the ring Burns really is a hard ******* inside it, he deserves a huge amount of credit.

Firstly I actually agree with the 'he broke his heart' stuff, though this will become as annoying as Froch and his 'warrior' chat. Ricky took his 'will' in the 7th, JG hit him with everything he had punches that would've stopped 99% of the weight division, and Ricky upped the pace a couple levels and JG just didn't fancy another 9 minutes of getting clobbered. Championship fights are 12 rounds, Ricky almost certainly would've won the last few and taken the draw(I had it the same as the judges), so lets give him a bit more credit than we are. JG is a more skilled boxer with much heavier hands but Ricky found a way to win, that's world class in its own right.

Secondly the Broner chat is ridiculous, the JG performance from the first 7 rounds was more skilled than anything we've seen from Broner, it was pure class. Plus Ricky always struggles a bit more on the front foot when he has to lead, this would certainly not be his tactics against AB, it would be a totally different fight.....whether or not you think Ricky would win, that much is clear.

Agree with that, far too many bandwagon jumpers on here, a few people say something and it become the norm to spout it over and over. People need to use their own minds, too afraid of being shot down on here

I'm beginning to think the word 'heart' should have the same ignominy as the word 'exposed'.

I will accept that Gonzalez was exhausted and had nothing left in the tank. But even during he 8th and 9th, Burns struggled to make a fistic impact on Gonzalez. Did the Burns' camp expect a different type of opponent?

I didn't say heart , one shot to the body after an exhausting fight(or even round) can do it. He didn't constantly pound on him but any one shot could have hurt him. You just don't know, as regards to Burns' camp that'd be a question for Billy but I think he was a bit of an unknown quantity and a very quality operator and Ricky wasn't at his best. It happens, the fact is though Ricky won and that's all he had to do to keep his belt.

Agree, happens after every fight. You're either a world beater or a talentless bum dependent on your performance that night, too many people looking for the negatives and it spreads on this forum because of the reasons you state at the end.

Fairly sure that Billy has said in the written press that they'd had trouble finding video of Gonzalez and had been reduced to watching short YouTube vids of him KO'ing people.

If this is the case then they may have struggled to fully prepare for Gonzalez who was an absolute stylistic nightmare for Burns.

I was shocked, I'd seen a few YouTube video's of him (mainly KO's) as that's all there really is, so I was expecting Brandon Rios to show up but a less talented Rigondeaux did haha.

I don't think ring rust played a part, Ricky has been out of the ring forlong periods before and come back looking good, Ricky's problem is that Gonzalez took all of Ricky's strengths away from him and neither him nor his team (me included) were expecting that. I gave Gonzalez the first 7 rounds and Ricky needed either a KO, or to win every round with a KD or two to salvage anything, he got out of jail for sure last night.

I hate to say this with the man being such an idiot, but after last night I really fail to see how Burns would live with Broner in there and after Broner pummels Malignaggi (let's be honest we all know he's going to), that's only gonna' strengthen the case. It isn't nice to say but it's the truth, I also think Vasquez would frustrate Burns too.

Final bit, I think zgonzalez lost that fight more than Burns won it, I'll never call any professional fighter a quitter, but Puerto Ricans are expected to die in that ring if that's what it takes, Gonzalez clearly wasn't willing to do that and he'll have to deal with the criticism he receives

    Dave,

Regardless if Ricky was outclassed rounds 1-7 he found the heart and will to make a very talented fighter give up. Broner is good no doubt but its fair to say his CV is not that strong. If you watched Broner against DPDL you would pick up the fact he is very stationary at times and was even getting tagged by Rees before he found range and used his power to close the fight. Ricky Burns showed genuine world class grit to get himself back into that fight. JG appears to be more talented but he is not the complete package. Ricky last night coped with the pressure and even when he looked to be in trouble he changed up the gears and broke JG's will. Congrats to Billy too, obviously Ricky's conditioning was tip top. Onwards and upwards guys.
    Regards

  12. I thought the wacko conspiracy theorists all resided in the Lounge. Apparently not.

Gonzales isn't the first fighter to seemingly prematurely quit & he won't be the last.

This fight was a blessing in disguise -type of event for Ricky. Firstly, he will be much more equipped to face guys like Abril and Vasquez after this fight. Secondly, I don't honestly understand why the past evening's fight would indicate Ricky's incapability to cope with Broner's assets.

Gonzales showed footwork and upper body movement that I have never seen from Broner, never. When one adds up Gonzales' 73" reach (Broner 71"/Ricky 70" - Boxrec) with the way he dictated most of the fight, and particularly distance, by his jab, it didn't surprise myself that Ricky was continuously overreaching during the first six rounds. Adrien Broner hasn't demonstrated to have the feet, the jab, and overall understanding of body positioning/motions to do that on regular basis.

One of the common factors between Gonzales and Broner is their heavy artillery in both hands. Impossible to say who has more venom but both visibly hit with great power.

Therefore, I have a tendency to believe that Ricky will be able to keep Broner (mostly) at bay with his jab and circle around him. At close quarters Broner could dominate the fight and hurt/stop Burns. Summa summarum, if the fight ever happens, it will be a totally different storyline compared to yesterday evening.

That is just what I honestly see.

Ricky showed genuine heart and grit, but that was the only thing Ricky showed because even when Gonzalez took 2 rounds off, Burns only won them on work rate because he wasn't hitting Gonzalez clean.

I sound like I'm hyping Broner up here when I ain't because I'm yet to be convinced he's the real deal, but he's progressed since Ponce De Leon and Rees only had success because Broner didn't respect anything Gavin threw. If Gavin had hurt Broner, I'd bet my house Broner wouldn't of been as open from there on.

The reason I'm so confident Broner will dispose of Burns as last night shows if you take away Burns' physical advantages like his size, strength, reach, etc he gets frustrated and doesn't have a plan B, adding the fact that Broner is HUGE @ 135lbs, physically strong, quick, has a long reach and now has experience at a good level, I just think all round it's a bad match up for Ricky
