    in ANY Era "the People" knew IF a champion was avoiding a certain fighter or not, the people knew who "the Feared" Fighters were... these are the Real Champions!

    Boxer's Champ. While a peoples champion may be more endearing to the fans, a boxer's champion is more respected by his brother's of the craft and that would mean a lot more to me. The problem with fans is most of us only see the end product in the ring, and don't really see or know the process that's takes place to be the best. Too often times we are influenced by the media about how we should view certain athletes or fighters because that's how they are presented to us through the media.

    I'm assuming this thread topic came from the recent praise many boxers and trainers have given Mayweather in his recent victory over Guerrero. If that's the case Mayweather would be the perfect example of a Boxer's champion and not really a peoples champ. However Mayweather choose this path and created a persona that would make him more money, rather than being more endearing to the fans. I believe it's a smart move. When you dedicate yourself to a sport for your entire career and have to deal with the ridicule he has (a lot of it is self inflicted) I can certainly understand why he chose he path he did.

    De La Hoya was criticized largely by his Hispanic peers because he didn't fight "Mexican" enough. Is that really a legitimate reason to dislike a boxer? But it's incidents like this that makes me understand why fighters now, more than ever, go for the money.

    that might be true in todays Vain & Hyped circles, where people ignore the Facts & Truth and try hard to marginalise anything against themselves.

    But this was not always the case, in the Golden Era's, there was SO MUCH TOP Talent that everyone "knew" the score and TOP fights knew they were fortunate enough to get the breaks, wins and more importantly 'belong' to the right people.

    the Fighters had nothing but the highest respect & regard for their fellow top men who on any given night the title's could just as easily have been theirs!!!

    @thistle1

    Don't disagree with you and I actually think, that what you are saying still holds true to this day and I believe that golden era of boxing (for those who paid attention) is the reason why many fighters are a little more business savvy than many of their brothers who fought during that era. Boxing has been at war with itself for years now, and as a result, fighters are trying to get what they can, (money) while they can. We've all seen the horror stories of fighters who gave their live to the sport, only to be a footnote in history, and leave the sport with nothing but empty pockets and brain damage.

    I think being a peoples champion must be a great feeling, but being respected by your brothers in sport, carries more weight, and I know the culture of boxing has changed, but fans are just too fickle and many of us don't even know what we want in our champions.

    @KO-KING

    I see what your saying, but at the end of the day it's a fighters skill and ability in the ring that sells and makes him money, and his business savvy outside the ring.

    Going for the huge paydays...

    You can better be a guy like "only one" Ricky Hatton, raw, losing your biggest fights, but have a big following

    I'll take "People's Champ." I've seen the way crowds react around the living legends.

    What's the use of fighting and taking pain for years if you can't enjoy your wealth and health in retirement? Lennox Lewis is the perfect example.
