Every fight that I watch with Lampley commentating is always a breath of fresh air. He is very passionate about the sport and his voice is always full of youth and energy. He might not always be accurate about what he is saying but I think his energy and enthusiasm is much more important.

Look at this for example, when he was commentating Barrera-Marquez.

    Watch from 2:33-3:35

    I especially like 3:00-3:30

Look at his post-fight thoughts on Pacquiao-Marquez IV, he looks like he's about to cry.

I think that a commentator who is enthusiastic and passionate is much more interesting to hear than a more duller commentator who is very accurate.

    What do you guys think?

i need a mix. Bob sheridan is very excited, but doesnt seem to know much.

Where Jim Watts knows his stuff but is just a misery.

I think you need a blow by blow guy like jim, sat next to a knowlegable guy like jones or max.

    hbo have a good combo

Jim is awful, he has a good voice and enthusiasm for the sport, but his calling of a fight is pretty dreadful

Watch Pac Bradley, and count all the shots that are nowhere near to landing that he calls as scoring punches

    Or Pac Marquez II, III...

He is basically just a fan watching the fights, he doesn't call them with any expertise, which would be fine, but when your job largely consists of saying 'and the THIRD straight lands in a row!' when in reality it's the third one to miss, it gets a little jarring

Can't stand the combination of him and Harold Leaderman..

(btw I don't believe Bradley won), but that vid is a good example of what he does a lot of the time

Considering he is the one telling the masses what is happening, it's not a good thing he seems to get it wrong a lot of the time

A lot of the time Kellerman or Merchant would correct him with something along the lines of '....I'm not sure it landed' after one of his rants on the effective of a particular ghost punch

Accuracy and good evaluation over excitement any day.

I get that fix from Showtime and not HBO. And RJJ pisses me of as a commentator more than Jim Lampley

Boxing needs Lampley if it wants to have spotlight in the mainstream. He illustrates the fight well to the casual audience and gives them a reason to be interested in the fight. To a lesser extent he's like a Howard Cosell. Exciting commentator with big personality.

His commentary of Taylor-Winky was appalling. "Jermain lands a right hand that splits Wright's gloves!" - what you and I know as "a right hand that is blocked".

I actually prefer Bob Sheridan. Does he know a hookercut from a bolo punch? No, but he's enthusiastic, avoids talking **** most of the time, and isn't a hype-***** like Lampley.

Al Bernstein is head-and-shoulders above everyone else.

Oddly enough, Scott LeDoux was good on Friday Night Fights. It was good to have a quality journeyman who understood the harder parts of boxing and could bring a better perspective to C/D/E level fights than most commentators.
