Burns v Gonzalez gives no clue to burns v broner

  1. Been away so apologise if this has been done to death but something I noticed about the fallout from Saturday

Gonzalez was a well schooled fighter who would of excelled in the amateur code, slight but expert foot movement to evade Ricky and able to slide back in range with success because of his unusually long reach.
Watching broner you will see relatively little in the way of footwork as he uses his excellent body movement to defend and attack.
One thing they do have in common is being able to generate good leverage from all angles,I suspect chelo was one of the biggest punchers burns has ever been in with and he has been In with katsidis,Moses,Martinez,Mitchell and johannsen.

I have always fancied broner to beat burns with ease but after Saturday actually I feel burns has a slightly higher chance than I gave before,if he uses his normal tuck up defensive shell and then move in and out with 3s and 4s he will have some success. Also he showed he can battle on the inside which broner is exceptional at.

I think the main reason Ricky struggled is styles, his last four fights have been against come forward fighters, with Ricky expected to force the pace for once I think his lack of experience at world level with this kind of opponent was his problem.
Adil anwar is a good British fighter who is tough to hit.gonzalez has sensational
Skills in comparison. But now Ricky has passed that test I actually believe a broner fight would be more competitive than Saturdays first 6 rounds were

    Thoughts?

Good post, another reason you can't compare is because every fight is different. One poor performance doesn't mean that'll happen next time. It's like people saying x beat y and z couldn't so x would beat z. Nonsense

It can give some indications, but Broner isn't especially mobile and isn't quite as slick as Gonzalez appears to be. But, on the flip-side, he's more likely to stay in the pocket and lay out some hurt.

So, it's unlikely we'll see Broner making Ricky miss like that, but we would likely get more fireworks.

Can't see the fight happening , but if is did it would be Broner winning in 5 rounds, i am pleased Ricky won on Saturday, but he looked far from good.

Anyone have any idea what Gonzalez's amateur career record was?

Would love to see Gonzalez-Broner actually

  7. He looked like he could of been an Olympic gold medalist with that movement, reach and reactions

I think he still can go on and be world class as long as Saturdays finish was genuine and he isn't lacking in heart

His name could look very good on Ricky's resume one day

  8. Eddie Hearn should sign him up

    New age promoting after all

Maybe not a ticket seller but lots of matches against Brits who are and who are world ranked

Watt and Halling were alluding to the fact that he had a long, successful amateur career but i haven't found any information on it.

Perhaps they're putting two and two together and coming up with 5. Just because he turned pro fairly late in his career doesn't mean he was a distinguished amateur.

Wonder if Billy Nelson and the Burns team were able to find anything about Gonzalez amateur career given the lack of Pro footage they found.

People are in denial if it gives no clue.

Deary me, if Ricky struggles that much against reach and intricate and clever defence, he will get murdered by Broner. Gonzalez was taking the most simple half steps back and Ricky was missing and over reaching, Gonzalez was barely moving his upper body and Ricky was made to reach, and every time he did, Gonzalez teached.

Broner would make Ricky reach, and then teach all night. For the full 12. I said before this fight I can only see a Broner stoppage if the fight ever happened. Ricky would do well to last the 12. Broner is an absolute beast and unlike Floyd Mayweather, is a predator. He sets out to finish fights and when he throws, he bloody throws. P4P one of the hardest hitters in the sport, he seems to punch through opponents like they dont exist. The uppercut to the body he got Rees with was unreal. No really. Watch it again. Broner even said in the post fight press conference he felt like he punched through Rees.

That tells you all about power, and Rees after the fight said he had never been hit like that before. I felt winded watching it. It was brutal. Eddie Hearn knows more than anybody how talented Adrien Broner is. He was dismissive of Ricky's chances before signing him, he is still reluctant to make that fight now he has. That tells you everything.

As good as Ricky can be on his day, Broner would still find a way of making Ricky reach, and then coming back with that uppercut to the body. As hard as nails as Ricky is, and he can obviously take a shot or two, so could Gavin Rees. Dont forget that. Gavin Rees is a hard little ****er aswell and even he buckled. Ricky was reaching all night against Gonzalez (MAY have been ring rust) but when he was reaching he was WIDE OPEN for that uppercut to the body. Ricky covers up very well (Gonzalez was getting through a bit) when he is taking shots, but he is open to the body when reaching. He may improve that though. But Broner would plant one exactly where it hurts if he made those mistakes.

I stand by what I said before the Gonzalez fight. And I doubt if this fight will ever happen now, I said this months back about Broner not waiting around and moving up in no time. But if it did, Broner wins by stoppage between 6 and 12. I stand by it. The Gonzalez fight backed that feeling up.

Ricky is obviously struggling to make the weight if you ask me, and will move up himself sooner rather than later. But even at his brilliant best, I still dont think its enough to beat Broner. Mark my words, Broner will have to go some to start getting the plaudits, but eventually he will get them. He gets a lot of hate for his attitude, and I can understand that. But strictly as a fighter, he is so talented, dismissive and spiteful. He might not have the footwork or A+ defence of Floyd Mayweather, but unlike Floyd, is more of a predator. IMO he has an A grade defence, but not the +. He is still a **** to hit, but he can be got, Gavin Rees showed that for a few rounds. Whereas Floyd on a good night, is practically unhitable, the genius that he is.

Broner fights his opponents like he is on another planet, so disrespectful, and he knows it. They genuinely dont deserve to be in his league, in his opinion.

He fights that way to. Its the aura.

Ricky could probably push him more than anyone that has gone before. But I still think he falls short.

As does Pauli Malignaggi, who will also get destroyed. Round 8. :deal

  11. I agree with you craney that broner stops burns but to take too much from Saturday I think would be a mistake

I disagree Broner would make Burns reach. I think Broner is easier for Burns to find than Gonzalez. Gonzalez was doing some unusual things, leaning back w/ razor sharp reflexes, great footwork to keep Burns lunging with the jab and countering over the top.

That isn't really Broner, unless we drag out that lazy Mayweather comparison which is completely redundant beyond the superficial level. The truth is, he's more like a cruiserweight James Toney, the difference being he's stronger than his opponents so he spends no time going backwards like James did. I make this comparison because Broner's legs aren't that impressive just like James's weren't. He likes a guy to walk into him so he can take them apart on the inside, otherwise he's quite happy walking them down and then obviously at short/mid range his handspeed and punch variety speaks for itself. This is what happens against Burns, IMO. And the crucial reason for Burns not really having a huge chance is Burns doesn't punch, not that Burns can't find him, or that Broner boxes the ass off Burns. Broner will walk him down through the mid rounds.

Can't disagree with any of that.

Hope you don't mind, I summarised your rambling nonsense for everyone else.

Agree with the original post. Burns would land a lot more on broner.

Just out of interest ginger warrior, did you give all rounds 1-7 to gonzales?
