The problem with having Wladimir Klitschko in a Top 10 P4P is that you could argue he isn't even the best Heavyweight in the world. Up untill recently i wouldn't even hesitate to say Vitali was the number 1 heavyweight...maybe age is now catching up with him but head to head i'd probably still pick Vitali even now.
Mares is a good fighter and has fought solid opposition. Problem is has he actually been the clear number 1 at any of the 3 weight classes he's been in so far? The number 1 at Bantam and Super Bantam was Nonito Donaire despite Mares beating some good fighters in those weight divisions and Mickey Garcia is the number 1 at Featherweight. I think to be a P4P fighter you have to at least be the clear number 1 in your weight division or have shown over the last 5 years that you've fought the very best fighters out there. Therefore guys like Mayweather, Rigondeaux, Pac, Marquez, Martinez, Donaire and Ward are obvious definates despite some of them losing recently.
Quality of opposition should be held in higher regard than being number 1 in your division IMO & given no one can match Mares' recent run of top quality opponents, he's easily in the top 10. He's more deserving than Canelo, Bradley or Froch given the people he has beaten and that body of wins also puts him ahead of Wladimir (whose lack of big wins is more an indication of the lack of quality at HW), Donaire after his loss to Rigo & Martinez, who I felt lost to Murray. There's enough reasons to justify him being top 6 or at a push top 5 p4p now in my view.
That's rubbish. So being the number 1 in your weight class dosen't matter now? If picking up a few solid wins against the number 3 or 4's of a weight class is enough then hell lets just put Ricky Burns in the Top 10 too! I think Mares is a good talented boxer but Mickey Garcia would knock him out at featherweight and Donaire and Rigo would knock him out at SuperBantam.
You clearly know very little about the lower weight classes. If you think beating Vic Darchinyan, Agbeko twice, Anselmo Moreno and Ponce de Leon as well as being robbed against Yhonny Perez is in any way comparable to beating Moses, Mitchell and Katsidis, then you really haven't got a clue. I assume going by your logic, Yoan Pablo Hernandez is top 10 p4p then because he is the consensus Cruiserweight no.1? And that Wlad is no.1 p4p for you because he's been no.1 at HW for longer than anyone else has ruled their division? Pacquiao & Donaire are no longer no.1 in their division and have lost convincingly recently but they're still "obvious definates"? Hmm, going against your own criteria there. Either that, or you are just utterly ignorant towards the quality of fighters at the top of the Bantamweight & Super Bantamweight divisions currently. Mares' opponents have been considerably better than Martinez's since the Williams rematch but you had him a lock in the top 10 too. You're cutting your nose off to spite your face with your arguments about keeping Mares out of the top 10. Or I repeat, you just don't know what you're talking about. That last paragraph is completely irrelevant I'm afraid. Plenty of people thought Agbeko & PDL would KO him or that Moreno would school him. They were all wrong and Mares has proven what a World Class fighter he is. Your worthless predictions on potential fights have no value in constructing a p4p list
You can take the Ring rankings with a pinch of salt these days. Since Golden Boy purchased Ring the editorial standards have steadily declined in its print and online resources. They hit a new low with the wrongful accusation against Peterson by Lem Satterfield fairly recently before he'd even checked properly. Although that isn't surprising when Golden Boy chose Michael Rosenthal to replace Nigel Collins and the pre-existing editorial crew. Rosenthal is a clown, and the Ring is run by a promoter.
You're off your head if you think Abner Mares is a Top 6 P4P fighter based on a few solid wins! I was clearly joking about Ricky Burns being a Top 10 P4P fighter and Mares has obviously faced better opposition then he has but neither have beat other belt holders in their division or beaten the number 1 yet. I'm very familiar with those fighters you've listed that Abner Mares beat, all good solid guys but again they're the number 3 or 4's of their division...not the number 1's. Even then his fight with Darchinyan was very close and went to a SD and he needed a shady ref and low blows to beat Agbeko in their first fight. Hernandez may be the number 1 Cruiserweight but not the 'clear' number 1, he would have to beat Huck and the winner between Lebedev-Jones for that to happen and then he could deserve a Top 10 P4P place. Same with Wladimir, he would have to beat Vitali to be a clear number 1 which obviously will never happen. There is a world of difference between beating Agbeko/PDL and beating Donaire, Mikey Garcia and Rigondeaux. Once he beats one of those 3 i'd be more then happy to say he should be in the P4P Top 10. Anyway i no longer want to discuss this with you.
Perez was no.1 at Bantamweight when they fought (and Mares beat him), Agbeko was behind only Donaire at Bantamweight, Moreno was the no.1 at Bantamweight when the others left the division behind before stepping up to SBW and Ponce de Leon was no.2 behind Garcia before the other weekend. So no, he isn't beating the numbers 3 and 4 guys, he's beating top, top fighters at the peak of their divisions. And anyway, it's not nearly as black and white as you are making out. Would you seriously make Hernandez a top p4p fighter if he beat Huck?!!! The opposition at that weight is seriously weak, as you can see if you consider someone as limited as Marco Huck is in the top 2. That devalues any of those wins and that's just the way it is unfortunately. Pacquiao never made himself no.1 at 140 or 147 a couple of years ago but the manner of his wins over World Class fighters like Hatton & Cotto put him close to the top of the p4p list because he was beating top tier fighters. Whilst not getting anywhere as near as much headlines, BW & SBW have been the best two divisions in the sport for the depth and quality in them in the last couple of years so for Mares to be beating the top contenders at the weight is very significant. Wladimir Klitschko hasn't even been beating the numbers 3 or 4 recently yet that doesn't hold Wladimir back in your eyes. Seriously, Pianeta, Wach, Mormeck, Thompson??? How on earth are they p4p quality wins? Don't make me laugh! Everything has to be taken into context. His dominance over the division and having beaten Haye alon the way means he should be top 10 but he hasn't ever taken on Povetkin or Pulev has he? beaten anyone, Haye aside, who was remotely given a chance by analysts for years. You seem to have one rule for one and another for the rest
Geez your facts are all wrong...Perez wasn't the number 1 bantam. Mares fought Moreno at Super Bantam not his natural Bantam and it's arguble whether he was number 1 at Bantam anyway. PDL could have been number 2, 3 or 4...dosen't really matter. As for the rest of what you've said not worth responding to as it's pointless debating with you.
Why's it pointless? Because you're not giving me any counter arguments, just stating I'm wrong? Or because you know what you're saying has very little credibility? I'm guessing the latter. You're right about Perez, Montiel was no.1 at that time and yeah of course the Moreno fight was at SBW but Moreno was the no.1 bantamweight after Donaire and Mares moved up. Either way, they are all better fighters than the dross Wladimir has been beating or even Bradley's recent wins
