Who cares about the 20 lbs? Would anyone actually seriously be picking Alvarez? It's the best fight and the biggest Money fight to be made.
As we established, asking a fellow champ in your own division for a CW, or worse yet, to drop a division down, is exceedingly rare. Why? Cause it's highly unchamplike, you're pretty much saying "Look at me, I'm worse than a paper titlist". I know only one precedent, DLH vs Hopkins. But one big difference is, everybody knew Oscar's belt was paper in the first place.
Oscar was a paper champ at 160. As was Manny at 150, 145, 130 and 135. Who can forget JMW Champ Pacquiao wanting Cotto back to 147
It must have been a rough couple of days for you. What's worse is, stuff like this doesn't go away so easy
No worries man, we've established this was a historical moment as weight stipulations go, likely without a precedent. Whatever fairy tale keeps you together through such a trying period, it'll do.
Ok, on closer inspection at no point did Pac ask a fellow champ from his own division to lose weight, in those divisions or any other. Nobody else has in fact. Except Oscar of course, but he was on a masochistic kick late in the career, wouln't say no to a little humiliation.
Do you know of another champ that asked a fellow champ in the same division for a CW, much less to drop a whole division? Exclude Oscar, we're not talking transgender boxing
As athletes in all physical sports become more educated, you will see less and less care about legacy when the consequences could me no quality of life. Maybe not care less about legacy, but legacy in comparison to the old timer athletes. There will still be the occasional people who won't mind being used as a punching bag, but many more will turn towards safety rather than old school go till you fall on your sword. Just my 2 cents.
So Mayweather has an asterisk because why again? 'Cause you just made up some rule Beating 2 titlists at 154 > Beating one titlist at 130, 145, 150, 135 :hi:
