Very interesting matchup. The fans seem to be picking Matthysse. The trainers and fighters seem to be picking Peterson. The media seems to be split. I can't wait to see how it plays out.

I think Peterson will outwork Lucas to a UD win. He will also look to smother Lucas' power and fight him on the inside.

Watching Peterson against Holt though, I have to say he got tagged more than I was expecting. It may have been rust, but there was a trend in rounds 3 and 4 of getting tagged hard to the body while shelling up, and getting caught by quick straight right hands while he brought his left hand back low. Holt was reaching with them, but Matthysse's best shot is slipping a jab and coming back with a bomb of a straight right hand. Peterson is a slow starter, as he evidenced with Khan, Cayo, and Holt. He doesn't really commit himself to doing inside work until later in a fight, and his boxing early consists of one or two shots at a time. I think this will be a liability against someone like Matthysse, who isn't a super fast starter, but is more consistent in his pressure and sharp and very committed with his offense from the get-go.

Whether Matthysse can pressure him is an interesting question. Peterson's movement is good, but he often gives up the center. He is probably stronger than Matthysse, but Mathysse's power is very real and will still find its way to Peterson's body at close range. I think that all things considered, Peterson's going to go into the second half behind, unless he can start very fast and back Mathysse up. But seeing how he performed against Cayo and Holt in the first half, I think he will have his work cut out for him by the 6th. His jab is a good tool, but if he keeps throwing it lazily, he got just end up getting dropped and hurt.

The left hook is a good punch to use in inside exchanges in general, and Peterson has a good one. But I completely have to disagree with you on Mathysse's head movement and Peterson's jab.

Rewatching rounds 3 and 4, I’ve made note of every instance where Peterson’s low left hand opened up an opportunity for Holt to land with his straight right up top (which he sometimes landed and sometimes just fell short with):

Matthysse uses good subtle head movement on the inside, as he showed against Soto, and at mid-range trying to close the distance on his opponents. Slipping the left to land a right is something Mathysse does very well, sharper and harder than Holt does at this stage.

Peterson’s jab is good when it lands, but it leaves a gap upon returning. It happened so many times so close together, and Peterson seems in trouble whenever his opponent controls the center of a ring instead of him (Khan). Ad******g by pushing Mathysse back to control the center while avoiding severe punishment looks to be a hard task.

This one observation may not determine the fight, it’s just one aspect of the match-up, but you can be sure that it is a liability against someone as dangerously powerful as Matthysse.

Ultimately I don't think Peterson has the defense on the back foot to dodge Mathysse's punches, and Mathysse isn't wide open to counter coming forward. He's actually quite good at minimizing his damage as he comes forward, and he's the tighter inside fighter. Peterson seems strong so it will be interesting to see if he can push Lucas back but I doubt it. If he tries to slug it out on the inside he'll get caught with something, and on the back-foot he won't be able to deter Mathysse. Circling while throwing quick combinations to the body first, then head, is his best bet. But Mathysse will catch him pulling out, probably over that lazy jab he kept paying for against Holt.

Soto's strength is fighting chest-to-chest and he barely hit Mathysse flush.

At the very least, Peterson goes down early in this fight. He's been down numerous times in recent fights and Lucas is the hardest puncher he has faced to date.

Ive been looking forward to this fight more then any fight this year..i think is a toss up fight to be honest but i have to give a slight edge to lamont injust think he has more to his game then lucas does..cant wait though
