Frank Mir - UFC HOF worthy, or not?

So basketball was 68 years old when the hall of fame inducted it's 1st member. The ufc hasn't turned 20 yet.

 

Thanks for pointing that out. That makes a lot more sense. Now if mma had a hall of fame like that it would be worth something.

 

Mir doesn't have any killer instinct. Maybe because he has never been a great striker. There are a lot of fights that he should have won but he simply didn't believe in himself. For that reason I would vote.... no.

 

And Mixed Martial Arts has been around for well over a thousand years in some form or another and has currently evolved into what we see now.

The UFC will be 20 this November.

And the whole point of my contention was your silly notion that we shouldn't put anyone in the Hall of Fame because of what might happen in the future.

Do you think Matt Hughes has a Hall of Fame career, yes or no?

 

My point wasn't just limited to what will happen in the future. It's the ufc's exclusion of careers outside of the organization. There is enough history in Brazil, Japan, and the US to do an mma hall of fame. When you limit it to an organization that is less than 20 years old, and only to its participants, it doesn't carry much weight. Matt Hughes has had the type of career that will probably stand the test of time. That's why I used Rich Franklin as an example. Franklin's career may be good enough to include in the ufc's hall of fame when you limit the scope to the ufc alone. In 20 years time, even with that limited scope, he will probably have too weak of a career to be in all time great company. People will be like, "what the **** is this guy doing here?"

We were arguing, and I was being insulting before, but the following is a genuine question without any condescension. Do you see the point I was trying to make now? I'm saying the ufc's hall of fame is more like an employee of the month club when you compare it to something like the the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

 

Is there any other MAJOR league, with international exposure, like a global type league, that has it's own Hall of Fame? Not Hockey, Football, or Basketball. Is there?

Well, I'd like to see something sort of like a Hall of Fame that is inclusive of all of those who participate in the sport in one way or another, similarly with coaches and others in other sports.

It just gets trickier with MMA because there is no clear avenue to real significant success, currently, outside of the UFC. PrideFC was the closest thing to it and as much as I absolutely loved it, it did have it's problems.

Analogously keeping with the NBA/Basketball theme we could say that the Basketball Hall of Fame is about basketball, it's mostly about Professional basketball and the other smaller percentage is college and maybe a fraction of a percent is other. With MMA it's not so clear how else that would work from here moving forward. MMA doesn't have an equivalent to the college ranks or the D-League. Promotions have come and gone and the only one that has stood the test of time, until now, while promoting the sport itself and developing it at the same time worldwide is the UFC.

So, yes, I would like to see something like what you're now advocating and I would also change how entrants are elected and selected for admission. But as you've pointed out, the organization itself isn't even 20 years old so maybe we'll see something more in the future.

And Rich Franklin has a good case for a Hall of Fame career within the context of MMA history to where he's been involved. That really is all you can judge it against. Matt Hughes has a Hall of Fame career despite the fact that his competition then is considerably worse than it currently is at the elite level of the division because that's what he had.

Glad we decided to be congenial at least even if we disagree, which we might not.
