I like watching old Moore fights, his shoulder roll and dipping "Philly shell" type of defense. And knockout power tacking most of his opponents out within 6, 131 knockouts to his name.

Ali is still too big and fast for any version of Archie. Counter punching doesn't work as well against speedsters

 

I think Ali's speed and movement would have always given Moore significant problems.

Yes. The young Cassius Clay would still have been too big,strong and fast for Archie.

Im not having it, a much lighter and lighter fists of cooper troubled a young Clay, Moore knocks a 15-0 Ali out.

 

In 10-29-1960, a 192 lb Casius Clay (Ali) pro debuted against Tunny Hunsucker and 190¼ lb Archie Moore fought Giulio Rinaldi (Moore losing 10 round decision).

What if Moore and Clay fought each other that night instead? How would the younger, still past prime, Moore done against the green, yet very speedy gold medalist?

 

Clay doesn't hit the start of his prime imo until 62/63. If i was managing him outta the gate, i'd avoid Moore until Clay got a little pro experience first. That would obviously be the smart thing to do. But to answer your question i still think a rookie Clay would stand a good chance at beating Moore in 1960/61.

Prime Moore was brilliant and could easily take advantage of the fundamental errors that the young, green Clay made. You may be able to get away with that stuff vs. the Tunney Hunsakers and Sonny Bankses of boxing. But not a prime killer like Archie Moore, the deadliest and most prolific finisher in boxing history.

Btw, Moore beat BIGGER and STRONGER guys than Clay, so I don't know why Clay's size and strength are coming up. Counter punching? I saw a washed-up Zora Folley effectively counter a prime Clay beautifully. So what can we expect a prime Moore to do to a green Clay?
