Everybody who say Jones was a class above Lebedev clearly has no clue about boxing. Lebedev won most rounds with one eye left since round 3-4... He was in front when the fight stopped. I agree that this had to be stopped around round 6-7. Yet Lebedev was still winning most round until round 10. Jones at the end was just the tougher fighter also he had not to deal with cuts... although he took many huge shots.
The stats were weird. According to them Lebedev was landing his power punches at a like a 90% success rate almost every round. Just checked, the total punch stats through round 10 were: Lebedev - 358/472 (76%) Jones - 222/554 (40%)
The "withouth the injury" is the funniest part  The injury was caused by Jones' accurate right hand shots and the fact that Lebedev could not defend himself against them. The injury didn't happen as a result of an accident, but was the direct result of the two fighters' ability/inability in the ring. It couldn't have been "without the injury" so it makes absolutely no sense even suggesting such an idea. And in case you didn't notice Lebedev's other side of the face began swelling up with bruises as well. He was good on the offensive, he was excellent on heart, he was much better conditioned than Jones, not to mention younger. No wonder he was doing more work in the ring and the numbers were in his favor. But let me stress to you again that Jones was doing the damage legally, with his punches, not with headbutts or other fouls. You can't just right everything off to Lebedev's injury because it was caused by Jones methodical action in the ring. It's like saying "Oh well fighter A would have won the fight if he hadn't been knocked out by fighter B".
Not saying he didn't but those stats are freakish. 76% over a whole fight? That includes jabs so his power punch % will be significantly higher still. I doubt Floyd has ever got anywhere close to that, even vs Gatti etc.
G. Jones has been one of my favorite fighters for a long time and I predicted that he'd win a wide decision in this fight. But, the reality is that Lebedev boxed wonderfully in rounds 2-7, his peek-a-boo style allowed him to land numerous bombs on Jones, who soaked up a tremendous amount of punishment. Round 8-11 were Jones', but by no means were they wide. Jones shifted to southpaw, a tactic that allowed his lead right to me more in range against Lebedev's southpaw style. The lead right is a punch that Jones uses a lot, and it is more of a power punch than a jab. I had it 95-95 going into round 11. Credit both men for being warriors, tremendous fight. Jones earned it and his hard right hand at 1:05 in the 11th was the coup de grace. A couple of observations: The tempo of this fight reminded me a bit of Meldrick Taylor/JC Chavez in that one guy was boxing really well and landing the majority of the shots (Lebedev) but the other guy was landing just enough to badly bust up his opponent gradually, but still lose rounds. Both fighters fought well. Lebedev can come back from this, he is skilled and tough. Jones clearly showed ring rust and did not have his usual sharpness and accuracy early one. He gutted this out. My guess is he'll do what he does--fight once a year for the next 3 or 4 years and put in winning performances. If you want to see skill, go back and watch some of his past performances in the Cruiser division. His fights with Boudani are also good as is a total war at 168 against Jaffa Ballagou, if you can find that.
This is pretty much how I had it. Lebedev was landing clean and hard ridiculously often Jones chin is some other level ****.
This fight proved white fighters cut easier than Black fighters. Jones took more shots but no cuts or damage at all. Lebedev's thin skin was sliced up with less punches.
I agree that Lebedev was outboxing Jones for much of the fight but that was always with the impression that Lebedev was doing so because he was the younger man. Jones looked every bit of his 41yrs in that ring and was forced to conserve his energy and call upon his wealth of experience to hang on in there. I had it 7-3 to Lebedev at the time of the stoppage, the majority of the rounds were very close and Denis was stealing them with his 1 or 2 sustained attacks a round and his flashy combinations. Its worth noting that Jones was the fighter with the most authority throughout the fight and had been that litttle bit younger his workrate may have improved and thus he would have won more rounds. However he done well to target the body with some vicious attacks and really made the most out of his opportunities to crack Lebedevs head back with hard straights. Jones ultimately broke Lebedev down with pressure and an extremely well thought out plan that he could carry out with his limited gas tank. Jones at times was doing his best work at the end of the rounds and was pacing himself very well unlike Lebedev who was always struggling to maintain a consistent work rate over the 3 minutes. The punch stats were terrible for this fight but i do agree that Lebedev done some very good work on a largely static target, his work was being done however at an ultimately fatal cost because he was getting tagged with well timed and positioned punches that eventually broke him down. Lebedev can come back from this though, he showed some nice punch variation, speed and power that most other cruisers would struggle to deal with. no one could have foresaw the inhumane punishment that Jones' chin can withstand. The eye though is not a point of circumstance but actually a point of consequence with regards to Lebedevs inability to get out of the way of punches. His workrate was the reason he was ahead on most people's card and also the reason he was eventually bludgeoned to the canvas. Its about time that people realise that a stoppage or injury caused by a punch is as legitimate as a KO caused by a punch. If a fighter gets stopped because they cannot avoid being hit then im sorry but that fighter simply wasnt skillful enough to win.
lol russians saying that lebedev was winning the fight not in my opinion! Jones was walking him down even in first 5 round jones landed more dameging shots many bodyshots was aggresor! If the fight would have been in panama it would be like complete mismatch as thay would cheer for Jones! Jones just destoyed Lebedev mantaly taking his shots! labadev finaly gave up taking a knee even then jones hit him once more like he was his puppy and to show him his place and he didn't want to get up from that for more!
