I have been watching boxing for many moons, and I have seldom seen a heavier handed 140 lb puncher than Lucas Matthysse that I can recall. He has been my favourite fighter because of his thundering punches and iron jaw. One more thing. I thought referee Steve Smoger after each knockdown of Petersen , gave Petersen too much time talking to him, and not given Lucas an opportunity to finish the job earlier...What say you ESB ?
burt, i agree. it's hard not to love matthysse. it's too bad rios and alvarado are with arum. matching any of those fighters would make for a classic fight. pryor and tszyu were both heavy handed at 140. while i wouldn't put lucas in their class yet, he is definitely improving over the past few years. who knows, maybe somewhere down the line he gets a shot at an aged mayweather. i'd watch.
Rocky Marciano, more wild though and his straight right hand to the body (more consistent than Marciano ever was with it). Both are seen as crude sluggers but there's more than meets the eye... Never seen Lucas tired (yet). Chin's solid.
Provodnikov and Khabib aren't with Top Rank and are both as appealing as Rios or Alverado in terms of the syle matchups against Lucas. In terms of power he reminds me of Kostya i just wish Lucas still had the awesome rat tail haircut.
:deal I'm not sure I'd necessarily say that much more wild though. Marciano definitely had more endurance/volume though.
Matthysse doesn't have the height, and he presses more now...But he reminds me of Arguello in his punch placement and style. He carries the same technical approach with the same weapons jab, hook, and cross...and a commitment to body punching...another thing he seems to share with Arguello is accuracy. I've kind of considered him a poor man's Arguello. We will see how good he is...great win last night. I especially took note, because I thought Peterson would outpoint him...I think he will stop Garcia
Really Matthysse is 11 stone, he comes in well over welterweight limit come fight time. Burt did you ever catch Saensak Muangsurin in the 70s? Now there was a heby handed light welterweight monster. Matthysse is fairly wild so I don't think he's the complete technical package some are claiming to see. But he's a fairly rounded and heavy handed puncher, less nous than Tszyu had though IMO.
Hes not as fundamentally sound or compsed as Kostya bur he does possess monstrous power. And for all his supposed wildness and crudeness, his punches find the mark on very skilled and even elusive fighters. He is doing something right.
1)i'm ****ing dying to see this fight! 2)if he has burt's seal of approval, there's something special to him
burt would you say he hits as hard pounf for pound as say a jimmy dime or a hal hoshino I know they were feathers
